12th Online Inter-school Provincial Championships - 4 March 2023

Armand Welgemoed of Hoërskool Klerksdorp was the champion in the 2022 event, but in the fast paced world  of esports where giants are toppled overnight, who will be the 2023 champion.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) shall be holding its ever popular 12th Online Inter-school Provincial Championships on 4 March 2023

An important feature of this championship, is that it is open to any learner, whether or not the school is affiliated or not, however, approval from the school is required.

Learners who are being homeschooled may also participate, but such homeschool clubs must bbev affiliated to MSSA.

However, for team events, it is required that all members of the team are all from the same school.

Players, will be able to play from venues approved by the school.

MSSA's 12th Online Inter-school Provincial Championships,offers local players the opportunity to qualify for selection to the national squad and for the Protea Team that will attend IESF's World Esports Championships to be held in Lasi, Romania in 2023 should they meet the criteria.


The championship shall be held on 4 March 2023.

Players are to acquaint themselves with the rules apropos substitutes and loadshedding.


Tournament Structure:

As per the MSSA's rules, being:

  • If less than six teams, the championship shall be a Round Robin Championship
  • If 6 to 10 teams enter the championship there shall be four rounds as played to the Swiss System
  • If 11 or more teams enter the championship there shall be five rounds as played to the Swiss System

Eligibility:

  • Any learner currently registered for primary or secondary studies may enter.

Entry fee:

  • Entry is R50.00 per Registered Player.
  • Only fully-paid-up Registered Players may participate in this event.

Entries:

Medals:

Medals shall be awarded to the first three gamers for both men and women (per  province) in the following categories:
  • MALE: The top three places (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)).
  • FEMALE: The top three places (1st, 2nd, and 3rd))
Please note that the medals shall be awarded to the players at the next LAN championship in which such team/player enters and participates.

Colours:
  • School Provincial Colours: All Players that win all of their Matches at a Provincial Championship will earn School Provincial Colours. All Players who score within the top 50% in a specific Period at a any two (or more) Provincial Championships, and who also score within the top 50% at a National Championship in the same period and in the same year, will earn School Provincial Colours.
When and Where:
      • 4 March 2023
      • The first round will start at 10H00. Players shall be given 60 minutes to complete each round. 
      • Players must all be on-line at 9H00.
              The championship is accredited as being of the same status as a provincial championship. This means that the championship shall be used for the following:
              • The awarding of school provincial colours;
              • The awarding of medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for both men and women;
              • The ability to qualify for National Team Trials. 
              • As usual Trials shall be done at a LAN venue, and the team that can best represent South Africa shall then be selected.
              • All medals shall be awarded to the recipients at a MSSA LAN championships.

              Shout casting:
              • The MSSA shall decide who may shout-cast the games.
              • Anybody wishing to be appointed as a Shout-Caster must apply in writing to mindsportscorrespondence@gmail.com

              Results: 2023 Western Cape Online Championships held on 25 February 2023.

              Lu-Zelle Kruger of 'Middies' from mpumalanga was instrumental in assisting the High School team win the senir division of the League of Legends esports title. Lu-Zelle Krugeris the youngest female to be awarded Senior Provincial Colours for the League of Legends esports title.

              With Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) being a member of both Global Esports Federation (GEF) and International Esports Federation (IESF), South African gamers look forward to more international competitions than ever before.

              MSSA has been a member of IESF since 2009 and has participated in each and every IESF World Championships.

              Thus excitement is running high as teams scramble to qualify for MSSA's National Team Trials (NTT) to be held on 25 March 2023 at which the Protea Team to represent South Africa shall be selected for the African Regional Qualifiers for IESF's World Esports Championships.

              The Western Cape Online Championships, expertly umpired by Anneke Luies (Protea Team Member - 2022) was a phenomenal success with clubs from 6 provinces battling it out tjo take the honours.

              First time entry, Point High School from the Western Cape demonstrated how easily goliaths can be toppled with the school winning three divisions and with six players earning Senior Provincial Colours on their first outing.

              Great things are expected from Point High School in future championships.

              Of course, all players who have finished in the top three, or top twenty percent - whichever is greater, qualify for the National Team Trials to be held on 25 March 2023.

              All such players are reminded that to enter NTT, players must be in possession of a valid passport.

              Combatting loadshedding - with immediate effect!

              A tired Protea Esports Team departing from Bali in 2022. MSSA's Western Cape Online Championships grants all esports athletes yet another opportunity to quailify for the 2023 World esports Championships.

              Even though the South African government seems to be utterly incapable in resolving the national load shedding crises, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) still has to run online championships in order to select a team to officially represent South Africa at IESF's 15th World Esports Championships in Lasi, Romania in August 2023.

              It seems as though load shedding is here to stay, and while it causes major disruptions in MSSA championships, it also wreaks havoc on the economic, social, and mental state of the country. 

              To combat the effects of  load shedding MSSA has made the following ruling that shall be in force with immediate effect at all Provincial and National Championships:

              For Individual Titles:

              When a participant is unable to play due to loadshedding:

              1. A Player is awarded 1 point if unable to play.
              2. A Player who is able to play against a player who is compromised by load shedding shall receive 2 points.
              3. Such leniency is only to be applied should the Player have submitted his/her load shedding schedule at the start of play on the dedicated Discord Channel, and any revisions thereto during the course of the day.
              For Team Titles:

              1. All teams shall be entitled to have one substitute per round on the following should such substitute shall be Registered Player who is fully paid-up, and
              2. All teams shall be entitled to have one substitute per round on the following should such substitute only be used to replace a Player who is unable to play due to loadshedding, and
              3. A team may have up two 2 substitutes if a five man team, or 1 substitute if a four or three man team, and
              4. Such substitutes who have actually played shall be entitled to receive medals and colours as well as qualify for National Team Trials.
              5. A Team is awarded 1 point if unable to play due to loadshedding.
              6. A Team who is able to play against a team which is compromised by loadshedding shall receive 2 points.
              7. Such leniency is only to be applied should the team have submitted the loadshedding schedules for all team members at the start of play on the dedicated Discord Channel, and any revisions thereto during the course of the day.
              8. Since all players undertake to be present at such championships from 10H00 to 18H00, Umpire's have the authority to reschedule rounds at their own discretion within the normal championship times, in order to ensure games are played, where possible.
