IESF's African Regional Championships - FINAL RESULTS - Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

Richard Henry (Captain) lead the South African Protea Esports Team for the PUBGM title to a very credible fourth place finish. The  final day of play can be seen on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQq6ZuoouYU

Even though Egypt lead from star to finish and triumphed over all, the South African Protea Esports Team for the PUBGM title battled on determined to give their best and uphold the honour of South Africa in this tough international championship. Seventeen African countries participated in total.

However, the standard of play of Egypt, Algeria and Morocco is just on a different level. Even though the three countries were disadvantaged by bad latency (ping), the skills that the three countries have honed by being able to effectively play on European servers meant that the three countries are almost untouchable by the rest of Africa.

Game 10 results!
Nevertheless, South Africa finished in a very credible 4th place.

The South African Protea Esports Team for the PUBGM title team managed to win game 10 in a championship where the majority of the 12 games were won by Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco. Winning game 10 was thus no small feat!

South Africa winning game 10, and finishing 4th overall, establishes South Africa  as the strongest African team barring the juggernaughts of  Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco.

The South African Protea Esports Team for the PUBGM title has thus improved on its 2024 position where it finished in fifth position.

There is obviously a lot more work that South African PUBGM athletes and coaches must do in order to raise their standard of play to equal, or hopefully better, the standard of play of Egypt, Morocco and Algeria.

African Regional Championships - Day 2 - Tuesday, 29 July 2025 at 17H00.

IESF's African Regional Championships resume on Tuesday, 29 July 2025 at 17H00 and are streamed on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQq6ZuoouYU

MSSA's predictions are so far holding true. Egypt, and Morocco (now joined by Algeria) are dominating the field of play even with the ping disadvantage due to the server being hosted in Nigeria.

In online games, "ping" refers to the delay (latency) between your device and the game server.

  • Measured in milliseconds (ms)
  • Lower ping = smoother gameplay
  • High ping = lag or delay in your actions being registered
Bad ping in gaming—typically anything above 100 ms—can significantly affect your experience.

Thus, although Somalia, Mauritius and Madagascar  are not in the top five, these countries must be commended for their high standard of play as they are battling with the worst ping compared to many of the other contenders.

It is therefore surprising to see the lacklustre performance of Ghana and Nigeria considering that their ping is very low as compared to the majority of other participating nations. See https://esportscommentator.blogspot.com/2025/07/south-africa-takes-to-field-in-pubgm-on.html

However, the South African Protea Esports Team for the PUBGM title is currently sitting in fourth place.

There is a great deal of hope within MSSA's team that the team can still finish in the top three. The lead that Egypt has created is almost unassailable and it seems as though Egypt will win IESF's African Regional Championships - unless there is some sort of disaster that overtakes the 2024 Champions...

Johan van Breda, National Team Manager, stated, "The team is performing  as expected, and although we are besting many African countries, there is still much to do in order to reach the international standard."

South Africa takes to the field in PUBGM on 28 July 2025 at 17H00.

On Monday, 28 July 2025, South Africa's Protea Esports Team for PUBGM will take on eleven other African countries. The qualifiers are to be streamed on https://www.youtube.com/live/yoVHm3_8jAk?si=sYo0jXck7e6GXYVB at 17H00.

Despite Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) having raised its concerns about only the server in Nigeria to be used for the 2025 edition of IESF's African Regional Qualifiers - AEC25, IESF  stuck to its initial decision. The AEC25 will be used to determine which teams go through to IESF's prestigious World Esports Championships - WEC25 - to be held be held later this year.

MSSA had advocated the use of four servers so that all teams would be equally disadvantaged during the 12 game championship. However, the suggestion seemingly was not considered. Thus certain countries will have much worse 'ping' than others. The north and west African states are particularly hard hit with some countries looking at having 'ping' up to 300 ms.

A summary of the expected ping is as follows/l

CountryEstimated Ping Lagos → Country Capital or Major City
Ghana~30–60 ms
Ivory Coast~60–80 ms
Senegal~80–120 ms
Morocco~100–150 ms
Algeria~140–160 ms
Tunisia~150–200 ms
Egypt~150–200 ms
Congo~100–150 ms
Nigeria(Local) ~~20–40 ms typical within Lagos region
Somalia~200–300 ms
Djibouti~200–300 ms
Madagascar~200–250 ms
Mauritius~220–300 ms
Zimbabwe~150–200 ms
South Africa~77 ms (Johannesburg), ~172 ms (Cape Town)

The ping will certainly affect the final outcome of IESF's African Regional Qualifiers.

The top five countries in IESF's AEC24 held on August 19th - 21st, 2024 in Complexe Sportif Mohammed V, Casablanca, Morocco were (in order) 1. Egypt, 2. Morocco, 3. Mauritius, 4. Madagascar, and 5. South Africa.

Even though South Africa seems to have an advantage compared to many other African states, the sheer skill of Egypt, and Morocco cannot be discounted, and those two countries are still favourites in this event. On the other hand, Mauritius and Madagascar certainly have their work cut out for themselves with the high ping with which they will have to deal.

Even still, all athletes are hopeful and determined to give their best.
