Schools dominate South African Premier Mind Sports rankings.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has released the current Premier club rankings.

When reviewing the current standings, which are the result of three (3) provincial championships, it is evident that MSSA's belief of promoting esports as an official sport at school level is paying dividends.

It was not long ago that major private clubs used to dominate the rankings, but now, it is clubs based at schools that dominated the rankings.

School clubs take the first four places with a university club coming in at 5th (NWU - Vaal) and ZAG Academy coming in at 6th place.

The schools oviously provide a perfect breeding ground for clubs having the resources, and manpower to create clubs that have depth in membership as well as able to cater for a number of game titles.

It is thus not strange at all that so many learners find their way into the official Protea Teams which represent South Africa overeas, and at home, in international competition.

With nine Premier Championships still to be played, it will be interesting to see if Oakhill can hold on to its lead to become the top ranked club in the country for 2022.

South Africa's Top Ten esports schools

Oakhill School is dominating South Africa's rankings for esports.

The club ranking as used by Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) takes into account the participation of every single athlete that participates in MSSA's Provincial and National Championships.

Not only does the ranking server as an efficient tool for the Educators to judge the performance of their school, athletes, and themselves, but it also instils in the participating schools a sesnse of pride in that they are all helping their school to be recognised as the premier school in the country for esports.

It is true that schools that have stronger clubs that have more athletes consistently playing across a number of titles do better in the rankings. The greater depth of a school club often helps the club do better in the rankings, but more than that, it helps the club to be more sustainable. 

The dominence of Oakhill School, HoĆ«rskool Klerksdorp, and Northcliff High School is testament to the Educators in charge who have encouraged, enabled, and promoted the learners above and beyond what is normally required. All three such schools have effective esports programmes that ensure sustainability of the school club and excellence in game play.

Of course, the SA Schools Championships (11 & 12 June 2022 and 25 July 2022) as well as the NWU Online Schools League (starting on 25 July 2022) will be crucial to see just which school walks away with the honours of being officially ranked as the best esports school in the country.

2nd Gauteng Online Provincial Championships - 28 May 2022

Selection to the SA Protea Team is still wide open.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is still on the hunt for athletes with which to populate its Protea Teams to serve South Africa for 2022 to 2023.

With IESF's 14th World Esports Championships (Bali) quickly approaching, athletes have less-and-less time to qualify for the following Protea Teams:

  • Counter-Strike: GO (mixed)
  • Counter-Strike: GO (female)
  • DotA 2
  • efootball
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang
  • PUBG Mobile

MSSA's 2nd Gauteng Online Provincial Championships shall be held on 28 May 2022.

In order to participate, Registered Players must be fully-paid-up.

Tournament Structure:


As per the MSSA's rules, being:
  • If less than six teams, the championship shall be a Round Robin Championship
  • If 6 to 10 teams enter the championship there shall be four rounds as played to the Swiss System
  • If 11 or more teams enter the championship there shall be five rounds as played to the Swiss System

Eligibility:

  • In order to participate, Registered Players must be fully-paid-up. 

Entries:

Medals:


Medals shall be handed over to winners at the next MSSA LAN that they attend. 


      MALE:

  • PREMIER: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams.
  • UNDER 24: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams that have not won a Premier medal and which are comprised entirely of students currently registered at any officially recognised University.
  • SCHOLARS: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams of learners currently registered at any officially recognised school, provided they have not received any Premier medals.     
     FEMALE:
  • PREMIER: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams.
  • UNDER 24: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams that have not won a Premier medal and which are comprised entirely of students currently registered at any officially recognised University.
  • SCHOLARS: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams of learners currently registered at any officially recognised school, provided they have not received any Premier medals.

Colours:

  • Protea Colours: Only Players that are selected to represent South Africa in International Championships may earn National Colours if the Protea Colours Board's criteria are met.
  • National Colours: All Players that win all of their Matches at a National Championship will earn National Colours.
  • Provincial Colours: All Players that win all of their Matches at a Provincial Championship will earn Provincial Colours. All Players who score within the top 50% in a specific Period at a Provincial Championship, and who also score within the top 50% at a National Championship in the same period and in the same year, will earn Provincial Colours.

        General:

        • The championship shall be played on: 27 May 2022.
        • The first round will start at 10H00. Players shall be given 60 minutes to complete each round.
        • The championship is accredited as being of the same status as a provincial championship. 
        • The championship shall be used for the awarding of provincial colours;
        • The championship shall be used for the awarding of medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in Premier, Under 24, and School categories;
        • The championship shall be used for the ability to qualify for National Team Squad.
        • All medals shall be awarded to the recipients at a MSSA LAN championships.

        Umpires:

        • Umpires may only be contacted over Skype on the day of competition. Any communication not on the Skype channel shall not be entered into.

        Ladder:

        • For games to count for the National Ladder, teams must advise the Umpires before the start of each match.

        Shout casting:

        • MSSA shall decide who may shout-cast the games.
        • Anybody wishing to be appointed as a Shout-Caster must apply in writing to mindsportscorrespondence@gmail.com

        Results: Gauteng Provincial Championships

        John Kim (Hoƫrskool Middelburg) is fast establishing himself as the athlete to beat in the Clash Royale esports title.

        Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) held its 38th Gauteng Championships on 13 and 14 May 2022.

        In order to still take COVID-19 regulations into account, the esports events were held online while the boardgaming and wargaming events were held at the Old Edwardian Society in Lower Houghton.

        The event was admirably umpired by Johan van Breda and Anneke Luies who are experts at doing such.

        It was truly exciting to see eleven (11) athletes qualify for Provincial Colours and to see clubs participating in the event from Gauteng, North West, and Mpumalanga.

        With the Gauteng Championships being the first event to hold Morabaraba in 2022, it was wonderful to see the young University of Witwatersrand student, Saudah Bhaimia, who had earned National Colours, at the 2021 South African National Championships, continue in her winning ways to take the Morabaraba event.

        HoĆ«rskool Klerksdorp continued with its winning ways, and grabbed hold of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang  and StreetFighter V esports titles.

        All the teams that finished in the top three places of the Premiet Championships are now in the running to qualify for MSSA's National Team Trials (NTT).

        Thus the competion for a  place  in MSSA's official Protea Esports Team to attend IESF's 14th World Esports Championships in Bali later this year is hotting up.
