Schedule for all MSSA's Provincial and National Esports Championships.

Private clubs, university clubs, and school clubs all compete as equals at MSSA's Provincial and National Esports Championships.
Mind Sports South Africa's Provincial and National Championships are the longest running championship of its kind in the world. MSSA held its first esports provincial championship in 1998 at the Old Edwardian Society, and has never looked back.

As such the championship is a beacon to many of the other national federations around the world which are attempting to copy the championship.

Such Provincial and National Championships are also the foundation for practically all private events held in South Africa, as all of the most influential operaters of such (Johann von Backström, Luca Tucconi, and Barry Louzada) have all passed through MSSA's doors.

The championships have grown from strength to strength each and every year.

The championships thus provide a solid foundation for manyy esports athletes where they can learn the discipline, ethics, cameraderie, and loyalty that they would in any other sport. It is the contribution made by such learners that will create the team that will represent South Africa at a future Olympic Games - if and when esports is admitted into such organisation.

It should be noted that MSSA's Championships are official championships and may qualify for Provincial and/or National Colours at such.

The schedule for all MSSA's Provincial and National Esports Championships is as follows:

The different types of official competitions.

Only through MSSA's active volunteers do events like the National Schools' Championships take place year-after-year.
It is already well known that Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is South Africa's largest membership based organisation for gaming, and that MSSA runs over 30 events per annum in over ten esports titles.

That is staggering!

It is even more impressive when you realise that it is done by volunteers and that all income earned is ploughed back into developing and promoting esports.

It it is due to this methodology that MSSA enabled esports to become accredited as a sport and has enabled so many people to become involved in running their own private events.

Even VS Gaming's own Johann von Backström started in MSSA and served as MSSA's Chairperson of the Esports Board of Control.

However, with many of MSSA's championships, for esports, having started as far back as 1998, MSSA offers a wide range of events that are tailored for most gamers no matter where they live in our beloved country.

MSSA, also is the only organisation that runs events throughout the country.

MSSA elections: One of the hardest positions on the Board

Four previous eSports Representatives: (from left to right) Johann von Backström (2006 - 2008), Dr Ryan van den Bergh (2009 - 2011), David Webster (2012 - 2013), Ryan Boyes (2014 - 2016)
The eSports Representative is not only a member of the Management Board, but is also the Chairperson of the eSports Board of Control.

Having to run the eSports Board of Control is not  an easy task.

eSports is the fastest growing disciplines in MSSA with the largest number of clubs, and has, without doubt the most vociferous of Registered Players.

Often it means that the person holding the position has to fight long and hard at Management Board level to ensure that the gamer's rights are protected and enforced.

In fact it is through the eSports Representatives that many of the most profound changes have been introduced into MSSA.

All the eSports Representatives have come through a solid gaming background, and in terms of MSSA's  Constitution, have to if they wish to stand for the position.

Duties of the eSports representative are:
  • To chair the eSports Board of Control,
  • Ensure that the bye laws for the various titles are up-to-date,
  • Ensure that rankings are produced,
  • Produce a budget prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM),
  • Represent the discipline of eSports on the Management Board,
  • Liaise with IeSF, and
  • Manage the National Team.

Through careful management on the part of the eSports Representative, MSSA has sent Protea Teams to international  events every year since 2005, and has attained the following IeSF ranking:
YearVenuePosition
2015Seoul -  South Korea12th
2014Baku -  Azerbaijan13th
2013Bucharest -  Romania10th
2012Cheonan -  South Korea18th
2011Andong -  South Korea13th
Knowing the work that the position entails, it will indeed be interesting to see who stands for the position at the  2016 AGM.
