The juggernaut that is Paul Roos Gimnasium.

Paul Roos Gimnasium's team 'PRG LOL B' consisting of (not in order) Gerald Gous, Christian Hamman, William Jardine, Adrian Crous, and Corne Calitz.

The points earned in Mind Sports South Africa's rankings are based on the ELO system. The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor, and will over time show the skill levels of the teams and players.

At the end of 2018 the first three positions were held by (in order), Empangeni High School, Curro Grantleigh, and Northcliff High School, with Paul Roos Gimnasium not even being ranked.

However, after MSSA's 9th Online Schools' Provincial Championships, Paul Roos Gimnasium made a spectacular entry.

Moving from unseeded, Paul Roos Gimnasium now have a team ranked in 1st and 4th positions. Northcliff High School climbed one spot to now be ranked 2nd, while Curro Grantleigh managed to remain in the top three.

With the year just having started, it will be interesting to see if Paul Roos Gimnasium can hold onto its position, or will yield to the 'Old Guard' who are determined to hold onto their positions of authority.

At the top.

Unathi Nsimande (Empaneni High School) - head-and-shoulders above the competition.

Having finished in tie second place with Irfaan Sabet at MSSA's Premier KwaZuluNatal Provincial Championships in 2018, Unathi Nsimande (Empaneni High School) was determined to set himself up as the leading player in the esports title of Street Fighter V.
Thus, much to Unathi's delight, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) introduced Street Fighter V into all its school championships for 2019. In MSSA's 9th Online Schools' Provincial Championships held on 9 february 2019, Unathi showed just how good he is. By winning against every single player against whom he played, Unathi not only took home the laurels, but also automatically qualified for KwaZulu Natal High School Provincial Colours. Unathi now too is eligible to be selected for South Africa's National Squadas long as he remains ranked in the top ten of the Ladder.

Joshua Williams (Northcliff High School) leads the school ladder for the FIFA esports title.

The success of esports at Northcliff High School is due the commitment and dedication of Educators and Learners alike.

In terms of the amendments enacted at MSSA's Annual General Meeting, any player that is ranked in the top ten positions on the ladder, automatically qualify for National Team Selection. It is therefore vital for any player wishing to be considered for national team selection to actively participate in the Ladder.

The Ladder works on a system of challenges throughout the year in order to give clubs the opportunity to improve their teams/players' playing skills outside of the normal MSSA championships. The Ladder allows teams/players' to experiment with new tactics, combinations, etc.

Registered Players, through the Member Club to which they are affiliated, may challenge any Register Player on the ladder. Any Registered Player so challenged has 5 days within which to respond and play the match. Such rule allows the ladder to retain its dynamic nature and stops the challenged Registered Player from delaying unnecessarily.

However, any Registered Player challenged during any official MSSA event while both such Registered Players are participating in such event, and are paired by the umpire to play against each other, must play such challenge. This means that any or all games in a MSSA Regional, Provincial, and/or National Championship may count as ladder games.

The full rules for the ladder may be found here: Important changes to MSSA's Inter-Club Ladder rules.
