Breaking the glass ceiling at 2025 BRICS Esports Championships - 31 May 2025

 

Sydney 'KYōi' Wood is the only woman to have played at any BRICS Esports Championships as an athlete.

The Russian Esports Federation (ReSF) plays host to the BRICS Esports Championships. The 2025 BRICS Esports Championships shall be held at the prestigious Yota Arena in Moscow, Russia, from 31 May 2025 to 1 June 2025.

South Africa through Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has participated in every BRICS Esports Championships since their inception in 2023.

This year Sydney Wood from Cape Town, is a member of the team. Not only has Sydney proved her worth at home, but Sydney is determined to make an impact at the BRICS Esports Championships, and already she has made an impact. The entire morning of 31 May 2025, Sydney has had one interview after another, and being the only woman to have ever have participated in the BRICS Esports Championships as an athlete, Sydney has attracted a lot of attention from the all male field.

However, Sydney Woods finds herself in Group D which is a group of death, and will take to the battlefield at 15:00 to 20:00 (SAST), and will square up against Egypt, China, Malaysia, Turkey, Brazil, Thailand, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

There is not an easy match there and the championship will test all Sydney's skill, experience, perseverance, and determination.

Nevertheless, Sydney remains upbeat and is unequivocally determined to give her all and perform to the best of her abilities.

All of MSSA, administrators, officials and umpires, remain firmly supportive of Sydney in her endeavours.

Protea Luay Khan faces toughest matches in his life.

 

Luay Khan faces off against a character from the Tekken 8 universe.

This year Luay Khan, from Durban, is a member of the team. Being the best Tekken player in South Africa, Luay carries the hopes, dreams, and support of every South African esports athlete on his shoulders.

Luay Khan finds himself in Group A which will take to the battlefield at 9:00 (SAST), and will square up against Egypt, Uganda, Nigeria, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Turkey, Cuba, Belarus, and Uzbekistan.

UNIFIR3 to stream 2025 BRICS Esports Championships on 31 May - 1 June 2025.


UNIFIR3, a gamer from Durban, South Africa who specializes in fighting games (mainly TEKKEN) has the honour of streaming the 2025 BRICS Esports Championships on 31 May - 1 June 2025.

Without doubt UNIFIR3 has established himself as the top streamer in South Africa for the Tekken esports title. 

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is honoured to be working with UNIFIR3 and is confident that the streaming shall be of the highest possible standard.

The streaming shall be held on:

The participants of groups A and B will gather in the arena computer club at 08:00 (SAST). Gathering of participants groups С and D in the arena computer club at 14:30. 

The matches will then begin at:

  •  Groups A and B play matches from 9:00 to 14:00 (SAST) 
  •  Groups C and D play matches from 15:00 to 20:00 SAST)
It should be noted that Luay Khan is in Group A, and Sydney Khan is in Group D.

24th WESTERN CAPE Championships - 31 May 2025

Avonique 'Avo' van Rooyen, captained the Protea Female Esports Team in a number of test matches,

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has entered IESF's 17th World Championships (WEC25) in the following esports titles: 

  • Counter-Strike 2 (open)
  • Counter-Strike 2 (female)
  • DOTA 2 (open) 
  • eFootball (Open) 
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (open)
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (female)
  • PUBG mobile (open)

With MSSA's National Team Trials, now having been selected for WEC25 (and its qualifiers, the African Esports Championships, - AEC25), MSSA's 24th WESTERN CAPE Championships to be held on 31 May 2025 offers all esports athletes chance in 2025 to qualify for National Team Trials to be held in 2026

Thus the hunt is on for the 2026 National Protea Esports Teams. 

To have a chance to qualify for selection, players must be members of an affiliated club and qualify for National Team Trials at a MSSA event.

In order to participate, players must be registered for the 2024/2025 season.

The championship shall be held on 31 May 2025.

Tournament Structure:


As per the MSSA's rules, being:

  • If less than six teams, the championship shall be a Round Robin Championship
  • If 6 to 10 teams enter the championship there shall be four rounds as played to the Swiss System
  • If 11 or more teams enter the championship there shall be five rounds as played to the Swiss System

Eligibility:

  • Any team consisting of players who are Registered Players affiliated to a MSSA member club may enter.

Entries:

  • Entry is R100.00 per Registered Player.
  • Only fully-paid-up Registered Players may participate in this event.
  • Entries must be submitted by midnight 30 May 2025
  • To enter, the club must complete the Google Drive document.

  • Clubs are to download the entry form, completed the downloaded form, and e-mail it to Mind Sports South Africa.

Medals:


Medals shall be handed over to winners at the next MSSA LAN that they attend. 


      MALE:

  • PREMIERMedals shall be awarded to the first three teams.
  • UNDER 24: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams that have not won a Premier medal and which are comprised entirely of students currently registered at any officially recognized University.
  • SCHOLARSMedals shall be awarded to the first three teams of learners currently registered at any officially recognized school, provided they have not received any Premier medals. 
        FEMALE:
  • PREMIER: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams.
  • UNDER 24Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams that have not won a Premier medal and which are comprised entirely of students currently registered at any officially recognized University.
  • SCHOLARS: Medals shall be awarded to the first three teams of learners currently registered at any officially recognized school, provided they have not received any Premier medals.

Colours:

  • Protea Colours: Only Players that are selected to represent South Africa in International Championships may earn National Colours if the Protea Colours Board's criteria are met.
  • National Colours: All Players that win all of their Matches at a National Championship will earn National Colours.
  • Provincial Colours: All Players that win all of their Matches at a Provincial Championship will earn Provincial Colours. All Players who score within the top 50% in a specific Period at a Provincial Championship, and who also score within the top 50% at a National Championship in the same period and in the same year, will earn Provincial Colours.

        General:

        • The championship shall be played on: 31 May 2025.
        • The first round will start at 10H00. Players shall be given 60 minutes to complete each round.
        • Players playing 3 v 3 Rocket League shall be given 1.5 hours to complete the round.
        • The championship is accredited as being of the same status as a provincial championship. 
        • The championship shall be used for the awarding of provincial colours;
        • The championship shall be used for the awarding of medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in Premier, Under 24, and School categories;
        • The championship shall be used for the ability to qualify for National Team Squad.
        • All medals shall be awarded to the recipients at a MSSA LAN championships.

        Umpires:

        • Umpires may only be contacted over Discord on the day of competition. Any communication not on the Discord channel shall not be entered into.

        Ladder:

        • All games shall count towards the National Ladder.
