Combatting loadshedding - with immediate effect!

A tired Protea Esports Team departing from Bali in 2022. MSSA's Western Cape Online Championships grants all esports athletes yet another opportunity to quailify for the 2023 World esports Championships.

Even though the South African government seems to be utterly incapable in resolving the national load shedding crises, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) still has to run online championships in order to select a team to officially represent South Africa at IESF's 15th World Esports Championships in Lasi, Romania in August 2023.

It seems as though load shedding is here to stay, and while it causes major disruptions in MSSA championships, it also wreaks havoc on the economic, social, and mental state of the country.

To combat the effects of  load shedding MSSA has made the following ruling that shall be in force with immediate effect at all Provincial and National Championships:

For Individual Titles:

When a participant is unable to play due to loadshedding:

  1. A Player is awarded 1 point if unable to play.
  2. A Player who is able to play against a player who is compromised by load shedding shall receive 2 points.
  3. Such leniency is only to be applied should the Player have submitted his/her load shedding schedule at the start of play on the dedicated Discord Channel, and any revisions thereto during the course of the day.
For Team Titles:

  1. All teams shall be entitled to have one substitute per round on the following should such substitute shall be Registered Player who is fully paid-up, and
  2. All teams shall be entitled to have one substitute per round on the following should such substitute only be used to replace a Player who is unable to play due to loadshedding, and
  3. A team may have up two 2 substitutes if a five man team, or 1 substitute if a four or three man team, and
  4. Such substitutes who have actually played shall be entitled to receive medals and colours as well as qualify for National Team Trials.
  5. A Team is awarded 1 point if unable to play due to loadshedding.
  6. A Team who is able to play against a team which is compromised by loadshedding shall receive 2 points.
  7. Such leniency is only to be applied should the team have submitted the loadshedding schedules for all team members at the start of play on the dedicated Discord Channel, and any revisions thereto during the course of the day.
  8. Since all players undertake to be present at such championships from 10H00 to 18H00, Umpire's have the authority to reschedule rounds at their own discretion within the normal championship times, in order to ensure games are played, where possible.

        Umpire Course - 18 February 2023

        Those that make the grade.

One of the most important aspects of a well run championship is the consistency and standard of umpiring.

Umpiring affects every aspect of a championship, and since Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is highly cognisant of such, MSSA shall continue to hold a number of umpires' courses during 2023.

Players who have reached the age of majority and have received Protea and/or, National Federation, and/or Provincial Colours in the previous year, shall have successfully completed an Umpires’ Course (if such course was held in the province in which such player resides after the date of being awarded such colours)  in order to be considered for selection.

Such umpiring courses shall ensure that umpires are certified and are fully aware of their duties and responsibilities.

The course shall be done as follows:

        Date: 18 February 2023
        • Ethics
        • Background to MSSA's systems
        • Roles of the different umpires
        • Entry
        • Pairings
        • Data capturing of results
        • How results are further used
At the end, a test will be given, and those that pass will be accredited as level 1 umpires.

Any Registered Player who is 18 or older may register for such course through their member club.

        Kazan to host Phygital Games

The Phygital games melds physical sports with esports...

Esports in a brand-new format? Sounds intriguing.

On February 5-11 Kazan will host the Phygital Games, an innovative new international sports event. CS:GO, Warface, MLBB, Dota 2 and Speedrun are all on the menu.

To the surprise of both esports fans and players, the organizers have decided to utilize a phygital format.

What does it mean? As the name suggests, “phygital” means a combination of both physical and digital. All the competitions will follow this formula, combining popular titles such as Dota 2, CS:GO, MLBB and Warface with laser tag. In the future, this exciting new format will evolve further with the physical aspect involving other activities, especially for MOBA.

This LAN tournament serves as a qualifying event for the Games of Future that will take place in Kazan next March.

        Speedrun comes on track

        Dates: 5-8 February 2023

Four teams, containing three athletes from the speedrun underground community, will showcase their skills and how they can hack the video games. Each run consists of three stages, on three different platforms – retro console, modern PC and retro PC – with the fastest overall team emerging as the winners. The competitors are set to compete in classic adventure games such as "Super Mario Bros.", "Comix Zone" and "Chip'n'Dale", horror games "Resident Evil 2 Remake", "Little Nightmares", "Mirror's Edge", along with "Hitman: Codename 47", "Quake" and "Serious Sam: The First Encounter".

        • February 5 – group stage
        • February 6 – semi-finals
        • February 7 – finals
        • February 8 – laser tag show match
In MOBA we trust: Dota 2 vs. MLBB winners compete in laser tag

        Dates: 6-8 February 2023
Dota 2 teams: One Move, Alpha, Keyd Stars, Matreshka
MLBB teams: FREAK FIVE, Genius Esports, Team Max, Rose Noire

Several famous MOBA games are also on the agenda for the Games of Future disciplines. The event organizers elected the laser tag as the physical discipline for the first edition, but in the future they are contemplating to create a competition closer to the games’ own universes and concepts.

The teams will compete according to the Olympic system adhering to the rules of esports. Once the e-competitions are over, much like with Speedrun, the teams will take on one another in a laser tag show match.
        • February 6 – semifinals
        • February 7 – finals
        • February 8 – laser tag show match
        Tactical Challenge

        Dates: 9-10 February 2023
CS:GO teams: Websterz, HOTU, WINDINGO, 9 Pandas
Warface teams: Repulse, Awinaw, MementoMori, Winstrike

While Speedrun and MOBA contestants compete in laser tag in the exhibition format, those teams vying for the Phygital trophies in tactical challenge will get an even more authentic phygital experience. These e-players will battle it out in the cyber arena first, playing CS:GO and Warface, before carrying their scores over to the laser tag field for the conclusion of the contest. The team winning a round in CS:GO or Warface gains 1 point, while the victory in laser tag earns a further 2 points.
        • February 9 – semi-finals
        • February 10 – finals
The series of tournaments will be broadcasted on the Games of Future channels on YouTube, Twitch, Trovo, as well as on VK Play and VK.

Phygital Games are held ahead of the international tournament Games of Future, which will take place in Kazan in 2024. The first Phygital Games were successfully held in Kazan in September 2022 and included four disciplines - phygital football (FIFA + futsal), phygital basketball (NBA + streetball), Beat Saber and drone racing. In November and December there were Phygital Games including racing (Assetto Corsa + karting), martial arts (Mortal Kombat 11 + MMA) and hockey (NHL 22 + 3*3 hockey). Teams from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Turkey, Bulgaria and Iran have already taken part in the tournaments of the new format.

        Additional information:

Games of Future consists of five challenges: sports, tactical, battle, speedrun and technically assisted challenge. Disciplines of Games of Future currently include 16 innovative, carefully selected and sorted by popularity with youth sports. For example, if you take phygital football – one team playing against other first in FIFA cyberfootball, and right after - same team - same athletes - come on the physical pitch, where they play 5X5 footsal. It is important to note that both traditional sport and cybersport parts are played by the same athletes - these are the modern type of sportsmen that have both physical and digital skills.
