ENERGHACK SPONSORS SOUTH AFRICA'S NATIONAL PROTEA ESPORTS TEAM

Amanda Pakade (President of Mind Sports South Africa) and Jan Theron of EnerGHack.
Without doubt there are few brands as strong as that of the Protea as used by all South Africa's official national sports teams.

Mind Sports South africa (MSSA) was first allowed to award Protea Colours to an esports team in 2005.

Since 2005, esports has seen Protea Colours awarded to an official esports team every year except for one year.

However, the cost of awarding Protea Colours is substantial, and without dedicated sponsors, Mind sports South Africa (MSSA) would not be able to make such award or deliver a team to international competition.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is thus delighted to welcome EnerGHack into the fold as a part sponsor of the Protea Esports Team to attend IESF's 11th World Championships in Seoul.

EnerGhack is a pioneering energy drink in South Africa, and is the first to focus on the requirements for the esports/ gaming  market. The scientific formula which provides progressive energy,  without the negative side effects many times associated with the energy  and cool drinks  market,  is recommended for people 12 years and older.

EnerGhack is South Africa’s original energy drink for gaming and esports, and is a comprehensive  commitment to Health and Nutrition Science.

EnerGhack meets the needs  of the esports athlete in terms of:

  • Reaction
  • Focus
  • Endurance
  • Energy
  • Alertness
  • Hydration
  • Great taste
The scientifically formulated drinks have none of the negative side effects associated with the energy drinks market containing no excessive caffeine and no sugar to ensure zero jitters and sugar slumps.

As such the product is a  perfect sponsor for the Protea Esports Team as it meets all WADA requirements.

May professional esports teams 'try-out' for the Protea Team?

Team Esports Russia with the BOO! Protea Esports Team at IESF's World Championships - Busan.
The Protea Esports Team officially represents South Africa in accredited esports events, and is the only team that may legally represent South Africa in such.

Since 2005, MSSA, has entered the Protea Team into no less than 40 events and awarded Protea colours to over 122 esports athletes since 2005.

Currently MSSA is also ranked 12th in the world.

But are all the members of the Protea Team drawn from amateurs?

Over the years MSSA has selected Protea Team Members from a number of professional teams, such as, VexxedPhoenix, Bravado, Energy, xTc, Veneration, PolarFluke, etc.

A total of 38 of the athletes that have represented South Africa in its Protea Esports Teams have thus been produced by professional clubs.

For a professional esports athlete to be considered for selection, such athlete must go through the same process as any other. In other words, the athlete must qualify for National Team Trials at a MSSA Regional, Provincial, and/or National Championship.

It is a simple process, and the benefits are huge.

Playing in international competition

The BOO! Protea Esports Team that attended IESF's 9th World Championships - Busan.
There seems to be a great deal of confusion in certain quarters about who may, and who is eligible, to play in overseas competition.

The short  answer is that any person may play in any private competition.

Thus any South African gamer may enter ESL, WESG, Dreamhack, ESWC, etc., as those competitions are privately owned and do not form part of the officially recognised circuit.

In fact it has always been part of MSSA's policy to encourage teams to enter such.

It should be noted that MSSA even helped Energy eSports attend the ESWC in 2014 by helping to obtain deferred exams for two members of the team so that they could attend such the event.

MSSA believes that until more teams experience international competition, the standard of gaming in South Africa will not improve.

Thus all clubs should take advantage of National Lottery Funding, as such funding allows for travel to such events.

However, it should be noted that a club team playing in an event in a foreign country does not mean that such team is representing South Africa.

Only a team officially selected by MSSA may claim to represent South Africa.

Only the team so selected may be awarded Protea Colours.

Full list of Esports Protea Colours.

Maryke Kennard receiving her Protea Colours (2015) from National Team Manager, Ryan Boyes.
With Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) currently determining its Protea Esports Teams to participate in IeSF's 9th World Championships - Busan, and various online test matches, I feel it is important to publish the full list of Registered Players who have earned Protea Colours for esports since MSSA started awarding such in 2005.

The list is quite exhaustive and   reflects the names of the players who have represented South Africa with pride and distinction.

However, it should be noted that this is only a list of those who received Protea Colours. There are other teams that received National Federation Colours, but due to the full process not being complied with, Protea Colours could not be awarded to such teams.

A full list of all those who have received National Federation Colours shall be produced in the near future.

Thus the full list of Registered Players (both past and present) who have received Protea Colours for esports for officially representing South Africa is as follows:
