Important Official Announcement!


With IESF going to make the announcement apropos WEC26 only in mid March 2026, MSSA is unable to hold its National Team Trials on 14 March 2026.

The National Team Trials for IESF's WEC26 will thus be moved to 25 April 2026.

Two events will be squeezed in to ensure that all athletes have a chance to qualify for the National Team Trials that will be used to select the Protea Team that will officially represent South Africa at IESF's WEC26.

  • 14  March 2026 - 15th Provincial Online Championships
  • 18 April 2026 - 6th KWAZULU NATAL Online Championships
  • 25 April 2026 - National Team Trials for titles to be played at IESF
The Board is still set to decide upon the date for the other titles. In

All member clubs and athletes are reminded that teams are only chosen if there is at least participation from four (4) provinces during the year.

Esports Elective

Team sports have long been seen as central to education. Thomas Arnold, headmaster of Rugby School between 1828 and 1841 saw the character-building qualities of team sports as crucial to socialization and the ethic of muscular Christianity. Learning to work together, learning to temper your individual instincts for the good of the team. Learning to build your identity as a member of a wider community was vital in the education of those intended to be able to go out into the far reaches of the British Empire and administer vast tracts of land and huge populations in the interests of colonial power.

These values are now held to be odious, but team sports retain the power to build character.  The world depends now more than ever on building co-operation and the ability to collaborate in the face of adversity. If we do not work together, we will not combat pandemics or climate change, if we do not have a sense of collective identity we will fail because of individual greed.

Esports is now perhaps the fastest growing sport in the world and needs to be brought into the centre-ground of education. Too often computer gaming has been seen as a solitary, lonely activity conducted in darkened teenage bedrooms. While gaming generally has been brought into the mainstream and is no longer the preserve of a sub-culture, much of the stigma that has surrounded gaming remains in the popular imagination. Computer gaming is highly social, and according to research greatly beneficial within moderation. Every bit as much as the traditional team sports such as rugby or cricket, eSports offers opportunities for character-building. Although an increasing number of schools are introducing eSports as an optional sport, relatively few encourage it. Very few see the opportunities in using eSports to teach character and build capacity. Most schools either do not offer eSports or strangle it by not placing it on the list of compulsory sports.

Next year, in 2022, Roedean School will be introducing Esports as an elective subject in the Grade 8 and 9 syllabus alongside electives in traditional subjects such as history, drama or science. Currently Esports in the curriculum is largely taken to mean the use of gaming, particularly Minecraft to deliver content within STEAM curricula. This is important and has been shown to be efficacious, but the Roedean curriculum seeks to address competitive Esports directly. Much as one might play hockey during Phys Ed lessons, the aim is to give girls an opportunity to hone their gaming skills and learn to play as part of a competitive eSports team. The elective will also include topics such as team management, health, how to enter a tournament and a look inside possible future careers such as sports journalism. Students will be made aware of the tertiary bursaries available, and the range of possibilities students can pursue.

Turning your passion into a career is an outcome, to quote Hamlet, devoutly to be wished. Roedean School hopes to turn this maxim into an educational stream tailored for those girls who are passionate about gaming and who wish to develop this as their sport of choice.

Jessie Joubert to shout-cast SA's official IeSF test match against Switzerland.

On 6 Septemberr 2017 MSSA announced that the official IeSF test match against Switzerland shall be streamed on MSSA's channel on TULUNTULU.

The test match forms part of the Protea CounterStrike: GO Esports Team's preparations for IeSF's 9th World Championships - Busan.

The South African Protea CounterStrike: GO Esports Team shall play from Roedean College at the following times:
  • Counter Strike GO (Game 1) - 15H00 to 16H00
  • Counter Strike GO (Game 2) - 16H00 to 17H00

Jessie Joubert has established himself as a  well respected CounterStrike: GO player.

Having earned National Federation Colours in 2016, Jessie went on to earn Protea Colours in in 2017 and captained the Protea CounterStrike: GO Esports Team at IeSF's 8th World championships - Jakarta.
With the wealth of knowledge that Jessie Joubert has in both the local and international scene, Jessie's shout-casting should be most enjoyable.

Thoughts on MSSA's Esports National Team Trials - Day 2.

Sunday morning on 4 June 2017 was the second day of  MSSA's 2017 Esports National Team Trials.

Athletes turned up to play CounterStrike: GO. FIFA '17, and StarCraft II.

The venue for both the first and second day of trials was Roedean School. The School proved to be as good a host on day 2 as it was on day 1.

Again past Protea players were there to fight for a place in MSSA's 2017 Protea Esports Team. Among such attendees were Jessie Joubert, Simon Zandstra, and Francois Mouton. Edwin Williams who played in the 2016/2017 edition of WESG also participated in the Trials.
Of course there was a number of athletes present who were all determined to 'shake-the-tree'.

Again there was a record attendance with more athletes turning up for trials in CounterStrike: GO. FIFA '17, and StarCraft II than ever before.

The growth in the number of contestants bodes well for the growth of esports on every level.

Just the CounterStrike: GO. FIFA '17, and StarCraft II game titles saw entries from 11 clubs from no less than 5 provinces.

Players flew up from as far away as Cape Town just for the day in order to try out.

The Trials ran smoothly with many athletes stating that the event was thoroughly enjoyable.

After an exciting day, athletes finally departed. While athletes wait for MSSA to conclude its deliberations, athletes wait in anticipation for the announcement of the various teams.
The Trials were undoubtedly a success, however, the success is mostly due to the calibre of all the participants who gave their all over the two days of trials.

Thoughts on MSSA's Esports National Team trials - Day 1.


On a crisp Saturday morning, on 3 June 2017, athletes who qualified for DotA 2, HearthStone, League of Legends, Pro Evolution Soccer, Street Fighter V, and Tekken arrived in droves.

MSSA's 2017 Esports National Team Trials was not only the 16th such annual trials held by Mind Sports South Africa for esports, but was also the biggest such Trials held ever by Mind Sports South Africa.

Of course none of it would have been possible without the superb facilities of Roedean School. The facilities that Roedean has left all in awe. Many remarked that the learners who attend the school are most fortunate. Both Dorian and Sphiwe (of Roedean School) ensured the success of the event as MSSA officials dealt with all the administrative and umpiring duties.

The tension was palpable as many past Protea team members came through to defend the total onslaught by younger aspirant gamers willing to give it their all to get into the various teams which MSSA shall be selecting.

It was indeed pleasing to see the number of contestants.

The Trials were truly representative with participants present from 15 clubs from no less than 6 provinces.

The Trials ran smoothly with many athletes stating that the event was thoroughly enjoyable.

Thus at the end of the day, long after the last athlete had left, tired, but satisified, MSSA volunteers readied the venue for the next day.

Midstream College within striking distance of the top.

Mind Sports South Africa has just produced the CounterStrike: GO rankings from MSSA’s 16th Mpumulanga Championships held at HTS Witbank on 27 & 28 May2017

The young team from Midstream won each and every game that they played to end the championship on a perfect score. The team already has earned Provincial Colours this year, and clearly has their sights set on MSSA's National Team Trials on 3 & 4 June 2017 at Roedean School at which the Protea CounterStrike: GO team that will attend 'IeSF's 9th Esports World Championship - Busan' will be selected.
