On 10 November 2018 the International Esports Federation (IESF) shall hold its Ordinary General Meeting at which IESF shall elect a new president.

In terms of the Statutes, there are three individuals who qualify to stand for such position, being Silviu Stroei (Romania), Coonstantine Surkont (Russia), and Colin Webster South Africa).

IESF's current Statutes require a candidate for the position of president to have completed a full term on a committee for which he/she has been elected.

However, although three individuals qualify for candidacy, only two individuals are contesting the position through will of the membership.

In the one corner, you have Constantine Surkont. Constantine is a member of the Russian eSports Federation. Without doubt ReSF is a a huge, powerful, and overwhelming force in the esports world. With its massive size and huge interests in esports, there is much that ReSF through Constantine brings to the table.

In the other corner there is Colin Webster of South Africa. Colin has been involved in the administration of esports since 1998 and is instrumental for much of the constitutional change in IESF. While Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) cannot match ReSF in terms of resources, MSSA is the first body to have obtained official recognition for esports as a sport (2005), and is currently the number one ranked federation, by IESF, for administration.

It will be a tough choice for the member national federations, but the will of the membership will have its way when the majority vote one way or the other.

Meet MSSA's Selection Committee: Jessie Joubert

Jessie Joubert captained South Africa's first Protea Esports Counter-Strike: GO team, Such team participated at IESF's 8th World Championships (Jakarta). Even though the South African team came up across stiff opposition, Jessie handled all issues with a coolness well beyond his years.

In 2017, Jessie also did a stint on Mind Sports South Africa's Management Board.

Not content to sit back, Jessie Joubert (ZAG Academy) remains committed to adding value to MSSA and has volunteered for, and appointed to, MSSA's Selection Committee where he will be able to apply his knowledge of international competition conditions in order to ensure that tthe standard of South African Protea Teams are even further improved upon.

2016 saw South Africa  enter a CounterStrike: GO team to IeSF's 8th World Championships - Jakarta.

Such  team had a tough time  at IeSF's 8th World Championships, and South Africa returned with many hard learned lessons.
The lessons learnt were all brought home and helped to select  the 2017 team.

With IeSF's 9th World Championships about to begin, and the South African BOO! Protea CounterStrike: GO Team shall again be faced by strong opposition.

The team is in Group C, and faces Korea, Romania, Malaysia, and Philippines.

Nevertheless, MSSA has faith in the team, and faith in the members of such team, which consists of the following players:

SA has its work cut out for itself in League of Legends

Without doubt, South Africa's 2017 BOO! Protea Esports Team for League of Legends that will be participating in IeSF's 9th World Championships - Busan is the best such team to ever represent South Africa.

The members of such team have won accolade after accolade in South Africa, and are the undisputed masters of the game.

However, the team now faces its greatest challenge.

IeSF's 9th World Championships is about to begin, and the South African team shall be tested as it has never been tested before.

The team is in Group C, which is considered to be the Group of 'death' as  it consists of the national teams from Taiwan, Switzerland, Korea, and Russia. It should be borne in mind that it  was Korea that won such title at IeSF's 8th World Championships - Jakarta.

Nevertheless, MSSA has faith in the team, and faith in the members of such team, which consists of the following players:

On 6 Septemberr 2017 MSSA announced that the official IeSF test match against Switzerland shall be streamed on MSSA's channel on TULUNTULU.

The test match forms part of the Protea CounterStrike: GO Esports Team's preparations for IeSF's 9th World Championships - Busan.

The South African Protea CounterStrike: GO Esports Team shall play from Roedean College at the following times:

• Counter Strike GO (Game 1) - 15H00 to 16H00
• Counter Strike GO (Game 2) - 16H00 to 17H00

Jessie Joubert has established himself as a  well respected CounterStrike: GO player.

Having earned National Federation Colours in 2016, Jessie went on to earn Protea Colours in in 2017 and captained the Protea CounterStrike: GO Esports Team at IeSF's 8th World championships - Jakarta.
With the wealth of knowledge that Jessie Joubert has in both the local and international scene, Jessie's shout-casting should be most enjoyable.

In for a second term!

Ever since the MSSA's Constitution was amended to allow for an eSports representative to sit on MSSA's Management Board, no one person has ever managed to hold the position for more than one term.

Nevertheless, Ryan Boyes made the bold leap of standing for a second term.

The position of eSports Representative is a position that involves an incredible amount of work. Duties for such position include:

• Helping to select the national teams,
• Manage the national teams,
• Ensure that the bye-laws for competitions are up-to-date, 
• Maintain the rankings, 
• Chair the eSports Board of Control, and
• Ensure the good-governance of esports.

 Ryan performed admirably in his first term. Under his watch South Africa earned an international  ranking of 14th.

Also under his watch, South Africa participated in no less than 14 online test matches.

Ryan's dedication and attention to detail allowed him to also elevate others to positions that were reserved for him in terms  of the Constitution and Regulations. Thus through his motives of altruism, Ryan appointed Jason Batzofin to the role of Team Manager for the Protea Team that attended IeSF's 8th World Championships - Jakarta.

It, too, was largely due to Ryan's efforts that  Thomas Brown attended IeSF's Referee Course in China. The course paid huge dividends for Thomas as he was then appointed to referee the WCA Championships.

MSSA is confident that having Ryan at the helm of eSports, eSports in South Africa will continue with its exponential growth.

Upward and onward!

It was largely through the efforts, determination and perseverance of Jessie Joubert that Rondebosch Boys High entered MSSA's official schools' league and 2015 Western Cape Provincial Championships.

While playing for White Rabbit Gaming, Jessie won MSSA's 2015 SA National Championships. Jessie then moved to Anteria Gaming - for which  he  played during the Online Provincial Championships and National Team Trials,

Not surprisingly, Jessie's qualities shone through and Jessie quickly earned the following:

While at IeSF's 8th World Championships (Jakarta), Jessie was introduced to the 'big picture'  and Jessie immediately resolved to do more for esports and for the gamer.

Without hesitation, Jessie stood for the position of Vice-President in the hope of being elected onto MSSA's Management Board.

To show his sincerity of 'doing more'. Jessie too served as an umpire at MSSA's 2016 SA Schools Championships, and then again as umpire at MSSA's 2016 SA National Championships.

Jessie's infectious enthusiasm proved enough to get elected on to MSSA's Management Board where Jessie  hopes to make a  real difference to deliver more to the gamer. 

May National Team Members play in non MSSA events?

This is a question that comes up all the time.

It is also something which MSSA's detractors simply love to misstate in order to create as much confusion as possible.

MSSA allows all of its National Team Members to enter any competition that they want to. 

However, the National team Member must, and can, only represent a clan that is currently affiliated to the MSSA. Thus, for example, Joe Bloggs as a member of the National Team, and affiliated to Clan A which is a member of the MSSA, means he cannot play for any clan that is not affiliated to the MSSA. 

Should a clan that is not a member of the MSSA indulge in ambush marketing by claiming that he is a member, the MSSA will expect the player to publicly renounce any such claim.

Therefore, any member of the National Protea Team may still play for his/her club/team in any event both locally and abroad.

Anyone who states the alternative is merely a mischief-maker!

9th IeSF e-Sports World Championship 2017 - Host City Bidding Opportunity

IeSF's 8th World Championships - Jakarta

The International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) has once again announced the host city bidding opportunity for 9^th IeSF e-Sports World Championship, the sole e-Sports competition based on nationality.

IeSF hosts an annual World Championships. The host city for the 2016edition of such World Championships was Jakarta, Indonesia.

Thus, the host city bidding process is currently up on running for the 9^th IeSF e-Sports World Championship, which will be held in 2017. There is a great deal of excitement as three candidates have already expressed the desire to become the next host for the World Championship.

All bids have to be submitted on or before 30^th of December 2016.

IeSF takes deciding on the host seriously and due process is always followed.

In order to make the decision for the host city, IeSF supplies applicants with a “Host City Bidding Application Form” with a number of documents attached, including:

• Official Announcement for Host Bidding,
• IeSF Event Manual,
• IeSF Introduction, and
• IeSF Doping Control Guidebook.

National Federations, willing to host the event, are required to return the completed application forms, which include:

• Letter of Intent and
• Letter of Guarantee.

Detailed information such as accommodation, dining, transportation, venue, medical care, broadcasting, official titles and security needs also be included in the documentation.

IeSF first held its e-Sports World Championship in 2009 in Taebaek, Korea, where over 150 participants from 20 nations competed. The event was held in Korea from 2009 until 2013 when it was held in Bucharest, Romania.

The event in Bucharest demonstrated clearly that IeSF was more than competent in holding such World Championships anywhere in the world. Bucharest too saw the event grow to more than 500 participants from 51 nations.

After Bucharest, the World Championships were more than ably hosted by Baku - Azerbaijan, Seoul - Korea, and Jakarta - Indonesia.

Questions asked apropos Mind Sports South Africa

South Africa's Protea eSports  Team - IeSF's 8th World Championships - Jakarta

It never  ceases to amaze that even though Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) was founded in December 1985 there are still people that still ask the following questions.

Even though many of these questions have been asked before, MSSA never tires of answering the questions in order to bring about a greater degree  of clarity.

QUESTION: What is Mind Sports South Africa?

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is recognised by Act of Parliament^[1] as the national controlling body for mind sports in South Africa.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is also an affiliate of the International eSports Federation, Federation de Jeau du Mondiale, and the International Wargames Federation. Due to its membership of such international bodies, the MSSA is the sole authority for the games that it caters for in terms of the Sport and Recreation Act, number 110 of 1998 (as amended).

All sports are thus run according to their own Constitutions which are in turn decided upon by their members.

Thus it is the very people who have the biggest interest in the sport who have the say in what happens. It is the members that decide what happens, it is the members that elect the officials and it is the members that provide the vision for years to come.

Also, because of the legal nature of the federations, no one owns a federation. Thus federations are free of the ownership issues that haunt the privately owned companies.

However, even though the MSSA is governed by the said act, it is important to remember that the MSSA is a private association of members.

QUESTION: How does someone get their national colours for e-sports?

Selection of national teams is a year long process in South Africa.

Players from any team that is affiliated to a member club that finishes in the top 3, or top 20% (whichever is greater), at a Provincial or National Championship automatically qualify for National Team Trials. Since MSSA runs LANs in 6 out of the 9 provinces, many South Africans are afforded the opportunity of qualifying for Trials with little cost to themselves. Not only that, but MSSA runs on-line championships which too count towards qualifying for National Team Trials. To further reach all the outlying areas in South Africa, the MSSA allows the winner from any Regional Championship to attend the National Team Trials. There are 56 Regions in South Africa which consist of some of the most remote areas. Thus there is no excuse for anyone to not participate as the MSSA has made it as easy as possible to play in an official championships.

Selection of Provincial Teams is done very differently. The nine Provincial Directors are responsible for the selection of the Provincial Teams according to the rules established by the Provincial Boards of Control.

Meet MSSA's stars: Johan Uys

Johan Uys is a passionate gamer and student. He is currently completing his third degree in Honours for Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial and Organisational Psychology at the University of Pretoria. Johan began his competitive gaming career in 2014 when he first made the Gauteng provincial team.

After again earning Gauteng Provincial Colours in 2015 Johan was selected by MSSA's MANCOM to assist the South African Protea eSports Team at IeSF's 7th World Championship in Seoul as the head coach of League of Legends Team.

Through hard work and dedication, Johan became the Chairperson of Tuks Mind Sports, the competitive gaming club at the University of Pretoria in 2016 where he continues to help grow e-sports at grassroots level all the way up to elite level.

However, Johan is not just a hard worker, he is more than capable at competing too. In 2016, Johan was selected as a player of the South African Protea League of Legends eSports Team and represented his South Africa with distinction in the top lane at IeSF's 8th World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia. Johan has the distinction of being the only person in MSSA who has moved from being the coach of the national esports team to become one of its most valued players.

Every year the MSSA holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM)directly after the South African National Championships. 

It is at such AGM that the games to be played in the eSports Discipline are selected by the member clubs.

Meet MSSA's stars: Jessie 'JoobJoob' Joubert

There is no doubt that IeSF's World Championships prove to be one of  the greatest tests of character.

The  level of competition at the world's greatest esport championships for national teams ensures that every player is tested to the extreme.

Captains of teams are known to buckle, and only the strongest survive with  many falling along the way.

Jessie Joubert has now proven his calibre.

Although Jessie is the youngest team captain of a South African CounterStrike: GO team, and still a learner at Rondebosch Boys High, Jessie proved his mettle by continually marshalling and rallying his players in the face of some of the world's finest teams.

His 'never-say-die' attitude allowed the team to continually launch assault after assault on the much more experienced opposing teams.

South Africa faced off against Romania, Azerbaijan, Russia, and China.

In any other sport those opponents would be seen as lethal, and in esports, such opponents are absolutely deadly.

Yet Jessie rose to the challenge and proved  himself to be a worthy captain, a worthy Protea team member, and most  of all, a worthy South African.

Meet MSSA's stars: Lyle "VeXXCoN" Jeacocks

Lyle Jeacocks is an IT Field Technician with a hungry and desired passion for e-Sports. 

Lyle started playing CounterStrike at a very early age. Having started as far back as Counter Strike 1.6, Lyle has put in the time to know the game. 

Always willing to learn, Lyle is an avid gamer both online on on the LAN circuit. 

However, Lyle realises the  importance to balance his work life and gaming life as much as possible. 

Even though professional gaming in South Africa still requires a foundations to still be created before any gamers are to be employed as full-time gamers, Lyle is confident that South Africa will see it happen during his esports career. With the discipline and determination shown by Lyle, it is quite believable that he'll be among those who will benefit.

Before going to represent MSSA at IeSF's 8th World Championships, Lyle stated, "For me personally to be attending the World Championships in Jakarta is a dream come true as I've always wanted to not only represent my country on a international basis but also to be a part of this great e-Sport event. I am extremely proud and excited to be taking part in the IesF."

While overseas in Jakarta, Lyle performed to the highest standards, and represented South Africa with both pride and honour.

eSports and the IOC

Of late there have been many people in South Africa talking about esports becoming affiliated to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Such statements are normally just a  rehash of statements that have been made by others.

It is important for all gamers to fully understand the real process.

If esports is to be accepted as a sport within the IOC's structure, the IOC shall accept the international body as a member.

Once accepted, the international body then, with the approval of the IOC, chooses the events to be played.

Such decisions are then relayed down to the member federations.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has always believed in giving youth the chance to step up to the plate in order to lead.

Thus MSSA invests heavily in its athletes.

It has certainly been no different with Jason Batzofin (of St John's College) who in July 2016 was sent to Shanghai (China) to become one of the founding members of IeSF's Athlete's Commission.

Such is MSSA's belief in Jason's potential, that MSSA appointed Jason, on reaching his age of majority, as the Protea eSports Team Manager for the SA Protea eSports Team that travelled to Jakarta.

Jason accepted the task and swiftly rose to the challenge.

Backed by an  incredibly supportive family and MSSA, Jason hurdled each obstacle to deliver the team safely to IeSF's 8th World Championships - Jakarta. While there Jason dealt expeditiously with all issues - both large and small, to ensure that the team could properly concentrate on the event itself.

MSSA is absolutely satisfied with Jason's performance in the role of team Manager and expects even greater achievements from him in the future.

21 Countries enter CounterStrike: GO - IeSF's 8th World Championships - Jakarta

Internationale-Sports Federation (IeSF) hereby announces that a total 341 participants from 32 countries have registered for IeSF's 8^th e-Sports World Championship Jakarta 2016 - Jakarta, which will be held from 6^th to 9^th of October.

In total there are 141 participants from 14 European countries, 112 participants from 11 Asian countries, 31 participants from 3 African countries, 26 participants from 2 American countries, and 21 participants from 2 Oceanic countries.

125 of the participants will be participating in the CounterStrike: GO title, which, when you look through the names of the competitors, you realise just how hard the competition will be.

Nevertheless, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has every faith in its team.

The team as lead by Jessie Joubert is determined to give it their 'all'.

Cape Town TV will be broadcasting an interview of Protea CounterStrike: GO players Jessie Joubert and Simon Zandstra on Monday, 3 October 2016 at 17H00 to 17H30.

Cape Town TV is available free-to-air in Cape Town and across South Africa and Lesotho on DStv (Channel 263). The channel receives around three million views each month.

This is the first time that a Protea CounterStrike: GO team will be representing South Africa at the official World Championships.
