RESULTS: Northern Cape Online Esports Provincial Championships - 24 January 2026.

Rowell Pillay, who captained the Female Protea Team for the MLBB esports title, again demonstrated her leadership skills.

Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA)
 Northern Cape Online Provincial Championships proved to be a popular event with players participating from seven (7) provinces. MSSA's Northern Cape Online Provincial Championshipallowed athletes to play around with perfecting new tactics and strategies leading up to the 2026 team selection.

Athletes are reminded that by finishing in the top 3, or top twenty percent - whichever is greater, at MSSA's Northern Cape Online Provincial Championships, such athletes qualify for selection to the national squad and for the Protea Team.

Of special note, the Northern Cape Online Provincial Championships saw a huge increase in the number of female participation with an increase up to 27% of all participants being women.

Rowell Pillay, also known by her gamer handle “Ketsuka,” is a member of the all-women Protea Esports Team representing South Africa in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB)

Rowell earned the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) during South Africa’s second match against Mauritius in the MLBB test series held on May 1, 2025, part of a successful campaign that also included a clean sweep of Madagascar and Ghana.

Thus no-one was surprised at her performance in the Northern Cape Online Provincial Championships and led the team to outstanding victories, highlighting her skill in the game.

IESF announces game titles for 16th World Esports Championships to be held in 2024.

The titles offered at the 2024 World Esports Championships (WEC).

IESF (International Esports Federation) typically selects game titles for its official competitions based on several criteria including popularity, competitive balance, accessibility, and the ability to foster a global esports community.

International Esports Federation (IESF) for the 2024 World Esports Championships (WEC) has thus announced the game titles offered, being:

  • Counter-Strike 2 (open)
  • Counter-Strike 2 (female)
  • DOTA 2 (open)
  • eFootball (Open)
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (open)
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (female)
  • PUBG mobile (open)

The open category allows teams or players to be either female or male. A female team may only consist of female players.

Thus, it is not imaginable, that should our female players outperform our male players in provincial championships, and at National Team Trials (NTT), the entire 2024 Protea team could only consist of females.

With South Africa (through MSSA) having participated in every IESF World Championships since the inception of such championships in 2009, MSSA expects a fierce competitive spirit to continue to grow among its membership as players fight for a place in the Protea Team.

IESF puts out call for nominations for IESF Athletes' Committee.

IESF's first Athlete's Commission as elected in 2016: Koen Schobbers (Netherlands), Young Ho Lee, Mr Jun (the then President of IeSF), Jason Batzofin (South Africa), and Leonardo Ribas (Brazil), absent Madelaine Leander (Sweden).

For five years Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) had one of its athletes on IESF's Athletes' Commission.

With the IESF launching its Athletes' Commission in the Hilton Hotel in Shangai in 2016, the Athletes' Commission was instrumental in ensuring the rights and interests of athletes were always taken into account at IESF's Board.

The first chairman of the Athletes' Commission, as elected in 2016, was none other than Koen Schobbers. At the same election, Jason Batzofin, who was a learner at St John's College, was elected on the committee and served with distinction.

In 2019 Jason Batzofin was elected as chairman and continued to serve with distinction until, due to unforeseen circumstances, felt the need to resign. Upon Jason's resignation, Tiffini Lim was appointed as Chairlady by IESF's Board

a) Shall have experience as an esports athlete;

c) Have worked with their National Federation in the past three (3) years;

d) Have represented their Member nation at an IESF-accredited event

It must be noted that no nation may have more than one representative in the Athletes Committee.

IESF advises the prize money distribution for Bali 2022

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA ) has been a member of International Esports Federation (IESF) since 2009. IESF has announced a total prize pool of $500,000 to be awarded at the upcoming 14th WE Championships Finals, taking place in Bali, Indonesia from 27 November to 9 December. The WE Championships prize pool has seen an unprecedented increase in just one year, from $55,000 in 2021 to $500,000 this year.

Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) President, Colin Webster (also Past President of IESF) stated, "This is a welcome development which is the fruit of many years of hard work by successive IESF Boards. The increase in prize money will further enable the growth of esports as a mainstream sport and is greatly welcomed by MSSA."

"However," Webster continued, "MSSA will continue to lobby for parity for prize money for females."

The WE Championships remains the sole international Esports event where athletes compete by representing their countries.
