Nominations required by midnight,19 November 2025 for MSSA's Management Board Awards.

Jessica Greef (ZAG Gaming) was named as the 2025 Mind Sports Person of the Year as well as Esports Player of the Year.

Mind Sports South Africa's Management Board Awards are the longest running awards for gaming in South Africa. The awards take into account all the various disciplines being, board gaming, card gaming, esports, and wargaming.

It could even be argued that such awards are the longest running awards for rewarding such athletes in the world having started in 2009. Whereas the long running awards (like BAFTA) acknowledge the games themselves, MSSA's Management Board Awards acknowledge the contribution made by the very gamers/athletes themselves.

MSSA's Management Board Awards were initiated in 2009 to reward excellence not specifically provided for in MSSA's Constitution.

When reading through the names of those previously honored, the reader is quickly reminded of MSSA's rich history. The names are not just names, these are the men and women who have made an incredible contribution to the various mind sports in South Africa and even beyond South Africa's borders.

The awards are now more representative of MSSA's membership, of the work being done, and of society as a whole.

It should be noted by the reader that the categories for Writer of the Year, Social Media Person of the Year, and Sponsor of the Year are open categories and apply to anyone that has given their 'all' to the development of boardgames, card games, esports, and wargames as a sport.

The awards now take into account the following categories:
  • Mind Sports Person of the Year
  • Board Gamer of the Year
  • Esports Player of the Year
  • Wargamer of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Umpire of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Educator of the Year
  • Writer of the Year
  • Social Media Person of the Year
  • Sponsor of the Year
MSSA's Management Board requests all members to make submissions by midnight 17 November 2025.

RESULTS: Northern Cape Online Esports Provincial Championships held on 25 January 2025.

Neisha (Rose) Khan, captain of BellaTrixes, again lead her team to victory.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) held its annual Northern Cape Online Esports Provincial Championships held on 25 January 2025..

At the opening of the championship, MSSA President, Colin Webster, waxed lyrical on the successes of the 2024 Protea Esports Teams that participated in Casablanca (AEC24), Moscow, Sochi, and Riyadg (WEC24).

Before the start of play, all athletes were reminded that the top three, or top twenty percent, whichever is greater, automatically qualify for the National Team Trials (NTT) in March which will be held to select the South African Protea Teams to represent South Africa in IESF' prestigious 17th World Esports Championships - WEC25.

However, it was also stated a couple of times that in order for players to enter the much coveted NTT, that all entrants have  to have a valid South African passport. No passport - no entry!

The esports titles being hosted by IESF at its WEC25, all of which have been entered by MSSA are:
  • Counter-Strike 2 (open)
  • Counter-Strike 2 (female)
  • DOTA 2 (open)
  • eFootball (Open)
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (open)
  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (female)
  • PUBG mobile (open)
With athletes competing in the online championships from five of the nine provinces, the championship was hard fought, and no quarter was given.

Of special interest was the female Mobile Legends Bang Bang Team, BellaTrixes (of Maverick Esports) which again totally dominated their division. Under the skillful leadership of Neisha Khan the team earned itself Provincial Colours as well as reconfirmed their place in the 2025 National Team Trials.

Much is expected of BellaTrixes in 2025 as their standard is head and shoulders above the other female teams that competed in MSSA's 2024 championships. However, it must be remembered that between now and the NTT in March, there are another two championships in which teams may qualify.
The effervescent Jayna Bhula.

Jayna Bhula (Team PlayBell) snatched the title of best female in the Tekken 8 Eports title. The popularity of Tekken 8 is growing quickly among female esports athletes, and Jayna, a Computer Science student, demonstrated her skill and proficiency in the game.

Roelien van Dyk who confidently
lead her team to victory!
It was no surprise that Roelien van Dyk, team member of MSSA's 2023 Protea Female Counter Strike Team that participated in WEC23 in Iasi, Romania, lead her team to an easy victory to cement their place in the 2025 National Team Trials. Roelien is an experienced esports athlete, whose dedication and perseverance has rubbed off onto the team as a whole, making her team a formidable force in the Counter Strike 2 Esports title.
