South Africa granted victory with Namibia being disqualified!

Jess Greeff, Captain of MSSA's Protea Female CS2 team, is determined to achieve better results at WEC25 than at WEC24.

On Saturday, 21 June 2025, Mind Sports South Africa’s Protea Female CS2 team, led by captain Jess Greeff turned out to take on Namibia at15H00 on 21 June 2025 in order to qualify for IESF's WEC25.

However it was not to be!

Although MSSA's Protea Female CS2 team was online on-time and ready to do battle at the appointed time Namibia was not ready, if fact they were not even all present.

However the IESF officials kept MSSA in the dark, and instead of immediately disqualifying the Namibian team at 14H45, at 15H19 such officials had the gall to ask the South African team if the SA team wanted Namibia to be disqualified, instead of following the rules and doing it immediately.

Part of being a sportsman is following the rules. It is the rules that  ensures no one has an unfair advantage. This allows victories to be earned through hard work, skill, and sportsmanship. Rules too maintain the respect and trust of fans, teammates, and opponents, preserving the sport’s reputation.

Without rules, there is no sport!

Whatever the reason for Namibia had to forfeit the game, (which recently showed a lot of swagger in a recent article), it leaves a lot to be desired.

Of course, it may be that MSSA's Protea Female CS2 team are the 2024 African Regional Championships and are very much a force with which to be reckoned.

MSSA is of the belief that the 2025 Female Protea Team for the Counter Strike 2 Esports Title is the strongest female Counter Strike 2 team to ever represent South Africa.

MSSA's Inter-club ladder rules

Rules allow Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) inter-club ladder to be played on Regional, Provincial, and National levels for all categories.

Thus a club like Northcliff High School, could theoretically become the City of Johannesburg, Gauteng and SA National ladder champions for both schools and senior ladders.

Of course that would require a number of games to be played, but who would shy away from playing games?

Teams entering the ladder may pick-and-choose who they want to challenge. In theory a team could go from being unranked to being the top ranked team.

The ladder is thus be a great deal of fun, and will, no doubt, help teams prepare for LAN championships and National Team Trials. In turn, teams will be further prepared for the international circuit.

The rules are:

INTER-CLUB LADDER
  1. All affiliated clubs shall be invited to participate.
  2. Initially teams shall be listed in order of ranking.
  3. Inter-club tests may be held in each period.
  4. Inter-club test matches may be held on Regional, Provincial, and/or National Championship levels for schools, university, and/or open as well as for the categories as per LAN championships.
  5. If held on a Regional level, then such Regional Director shall be responsible for the notation of challenges, the collation of results, the write-ups of results, and the lodging of dates on MSSA’s Calendar.
  6. If held on a Provincial level, then such Provincial Director shall be responsible for the notation of challenges, the collation of results, the write-ups of results, and the lodging of dates on MSSA’s Calendar.
  7. If held on a National level, then such Gaming Representative shall be responsible for the notation of challenges, the collation of results, the write-ups of results, and the lodging of dates on MSSA’s Calendar.
  8. All teams shall only consist of Registered Players.
  9. Clubs may enter any number of teams.
  10. Results shall be submitted to the Management Board before 9H00 the day after the test was held.
  11. Any team may challenge any other team in the same ladder.
  12. The Chairman of the relevant BOC must be copied in on all challenges.
  13. The challenged team has five (5) working days (for esports), and twenty-one (21) working days for board gaming and figure gaming, to respond and play the match.
  14. A team that is challenged as per the above rules that does not play the game within five (5) working days (for esports) and twenty-one (21) working days for board gaming and figure gaming, automatically defaults and counts as having lost the match.
  15. A team challenged during any official MSSA event while both teams are participating in such event, and are paired by the umpire to play against each other, must play such challenge.
  16. The winning team takes the place of the losing team, if the losing team is listed higher.
  17. It the winning team is listed higher, the winning team remains in its current position.
  18. If the losing team is listed higher than the winning team, the losing team drops one position on the listing.
  19. The highest listed team, per period, at the end of the SA National Championships is given the title of SA LADDER Champions.

The process has begun to select the national squad for Morabaraba.

Joseph Mathlong (NWU - Vaal) has qualified for the selection process at three different events.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax— Of cabbages—and kings" (The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll).

Yes, once again it is time for Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) to select its national squads.

The squads too provide a pool of players from which the National Protea Teams that will represent South Africa in its various disciplines shall be drawn.

The system of selecting squads is a useful method for enforcing training as well as a player wish continually monitoring performance of those individuals who are so selected.

It is therefore vitally important that all athletes who have qualified, check the lists to ensure that there are no misstatements or omissions.

Should an athlete wish to make him/herself eligible for selection, then such athlete must write to mindsportscorrespondence@gmail.com for all the necessary forms.

MSSA's events for the month of September 2017.

September is going to be a very busy month for Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA).

What with three Regional Championships (Sedibeng, Johannesburg, and Polokwane) the month of September is certainly going to give a number of gamers an opportunity to not only win some medals and earn Regional Colours, but to also book a berth in the 2018 National Team Trials.

Any member club may host a Regional Championship. The rules are simple and are designed for clubs to fully benefit from hosting such.

The rules that govern.

Sport and the Law.
Any society is governed by rules that are acceptable to the majority.

As such all organisations in South Africa are subject to the laws decided upon by Parliament.

I realise that this may be a 'bitter-pill' for many gamers to swallow, but the laws apply as much as to gaming as they do to any other sport and as much as the (the laws) apply to business and to all residents of the country.

At this time of public protest, it would be disingenuous for people to try to 'pick-and-choose' which law they want to comply, and which  law they don't want to.

You cannot in all honesty, object to the actions of President Jacob Zuma, if you yourself are not prepared to adhere to the law.

And so it is with gaming!

Gaming needs to apply to the law, and the rules that they make often take into account the behaviour of those who have transgressed the norms of civil society.

Few rules exist because people complied, most rules exist because of people whose actions  have been less than acceptable.

One only has to think of the incident in DGL in 2015 where Ventus Gaming apparently used an illegal player. Many felt that the sanction was not sufficient, but the sanction applied could only be in terms of DGL's rules at the time.

The fact that drug testing is becoming more-and-more prevalent in gaming is only because there has been abuse of such in the past. If everybody complied with the norms of civil society, such rules would not be required.

In short it is the few that spoil it for the majority.

However, any good administrator enjoys seeing members manipulate the rules. Manipulation of rules is different from breaking rules. Players that manipulate the rules show administrators that they (the members) can think, know the rules, and can apply the rules.

MSSA's updated CounterStrike: GO Ladder (as at 17 March 2017)

Gamers having fun at the recent MSSA Gauteng Provincial Championships.
With yet another week of competition gaming under the belt, the ladder has shown some interesting movement.

However, it should be noted that not one team in the top ten (for either Senior or Schools) were challenged.

 It is suspected that that teams may be finding their feet before challenging the teams at the top of the pile.
