Charlize Seremak went straight from MSSA's SA National Championships to IESF's 11th World Championships.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) held its 36th South African National Championships at Fakkel School of Skills on 7 and 8 December 2019.

As usual, the school was a superb host, and the championships ran smoothly and without a hitch.
MSSA's SA National Championships is the last event of the year, and is without doubt, the most important championships on the South African calendar as any player witshing to qualify for selection to the South African National Squad, from which the South African National Protea Team, shall be selected must participate at such SA National Championships. Of course there are exceptions in certain cases, but in such cases, MSSA must be contacted prior to the event. 

Having run for 36 continuous years, MSSA's SA National Championships is breaking records. However, not all the various disciplines have been played for the full 36 years. Wargames heads the bill at having been played at all 36 National Championships, with Board games (in the form of Morabaraba) having been included in 1996. Shortly thereafter, in 1997, checkers made its debut. It was only in 2005, even though MSSA had been running Provincial Esports events since 1998, that Esports made its way into the SA National Championships.

Despite the pedigree of the other disciplines, it is now esports that contributes the largest amount of participants, and has more games (periods) being hosted than any othe discipline.

Even with esports only having been represented at MSSA's SA National Championships since 2005, it makes the esports portion possibly the oldest running esports national championships in the world!

Eleven (11) games (periods) were played, of which one (1) was a wargame, two (2) were board games and the remaning eight (8) were esports titles.

It must also be stressed that only titles that are played at SA National Championships, qualify to have teams selected that will earn Protea Colours. There are exceptions to the rule, but they are exceptions...

The championship was hard fought, and the standard exhibited showed a marked improvement over previous years.

Winners of MSSA's 7th Annual Online Schools Championships

On 11 February 2017 MSSA held its 7th Annual Online Schools Championships.

The championships were more than competently umpired by Ryan Boyes (Head Umpire), Jason Batzofin, Jessie Joubert, and Colin Webster.

The championships involved more schools than ever before from seven provinces, and many of the top private and public schools were represented.

Every year more-and more schools affiliate to MSSA, and many predict that within the next four years, the school online league shall involve more schools than any other sport.

Players were able to participate in CounterStrike: GO, DotA 2, FIFA ’17, HearthStone, League of Legends, StarCraft II, Tekken Tag Tournament II, and VainGlory.

The Online Schools Championships is the breeding ground for the National Protea Teams, and the schools championships allows players to qualify for the coveted National Team Trials which are to be held on 4 June 2017.

MSSA believes that the Online School Championships remains an important foundation phase to the development of eSports as a whole. MSSA is too of the opinion that the winning winning teams and players will go on to rattle the cages off the older teams and successfully challenge the 'status quo' of the senior teams which will ultimately provide the competition needed for South African gaming to improve upon its current standards.

Results of 2016 City of Johannesburg Regional Championships

The Old Edwardian Wargames Club hosted the City of Johannesburg Regional Championships (CoJ) on 24 July 2016.

The event had players attend from seven clubs from two provinces.

Needless to say, the competition was tough.

Nevertheless, the atmosphere was almost carnival in nature.

The Ancients period saw Jason Batzofin and Terence Allwright locked in battle throughout the championship. The end result was thus a draw between the two, and, since both finished in first place, both players earned their City of Johannesburg Regional Colours.

In Morabaraba, young Dion Du Preez from Witbank annihilated all of his opponents to earn himself Nkangala Regional Colours.

Results of the MWEB 20th Western Cape Championships

The MWEB 20th Western Cape Championships that was played on 22 & 23 August 2015 and which was hosted by Fairmont High School, Durbanville proved to be a great success. Elize Crouse proved to be a most efficient administrator, and the problems with which the MSSA had to deal with were unexpected late entries as well as some of the teams not being aware of the rules of the competition.

What proved to be most pleasing was the number of learners that had attended the event. In fact only four events out of the 11 for which there were sufficient entries were not won by learners, and then three out of the four were won by educators.

Of course, much of the growth in the championship is due to the announcement by the MSSA that it will be sending a full team to the 7^th IeSF World Championships in Seoul in December 2015.

The strength of gaming at school level bodes well for the growth of gaming both nationally and internationally.

With so many learners more than ably competing with their older counterparts, the MSSA is confident that it will find a great deal of talent in the schools. This talent, will be nurtured in order to provide a more aggressive competitive base in South Africa, which will hopefully be able to be translated into results on the international stage.

Thus it was not surprising to see the MSSA hand out Senior and High School Provincial Colours to no less than 36 gamers.
