Clearing up confusion - KwaZulu Natal Online Provincial Championships.

With Mind Sports South Africa's National Team Trials (NTT) fast approaching, many players are quickly trying to meet the minimum requirements for entry.

Thus the question has arisen a couple of times of whether only those resident in KwaZulu Natal may play in the KwaZulu Natal Online Provincial Championships.

The answer is short.

Any and all Registered Players are able to enter any MSSA Provincial or National Championships.

Thus Registered Players from right around the country may participate in any Provincial Championships to make the championships a true test of skill as well as a good training field for future international competition.

League of Legends re-instated.

The Protea League of Legends  Team that participated in IESF's 10th World Championships.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) ever aware of the needs and wants of its membership has reinstated League of Legends into all of its Provincial and National Championships.

MSSA's 2020 Annual General Meeting decided to drop League of Legends from its official line-up for Provincial and National Championships. Even though the decision was made by a simple majority, the Board felt it necessary to re-evaluate the decision based on representations being made by a number of member clubs. After consulting with the membership, it was clear that the best decision had not been made at the AGM.

Thus on 27 February 2021, League of Legends was reintroduced into all School events, and, based on the popularity of the League of Legends esports title in the school events, MSSA's Board has agreed (on 3 July 2021) to reintroduce League of Legends esports title into all of its Provincial and National Championships.

Being part of South Africa's official esports team is always a great adventure.

As COVID-19 continues lay waste on the plans laid by mice-and-men, and the state vacillates between its different levels of lockdown, it becomes increasingly harder to stick to planned events.

As a result, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has only been able to host its online provincial and national championships along with Regional Championships.

Nevertheless, MSSA is going ahead with its 2021 National Team Trials on 21 August 2021.

As most competitive esports are aware

To be eligible for selection a Registered Player shall;
  1. If being of the age of majority and have received Protea and/or, National Federation, and/or Provincial Colours in the previous year, shall have successfully completed an Umpires’ Course (if such course was held in the province in which such player resides after the date of being awarded such colours), and
  2. Have been awarded Protea and/or National Federation Colours in the previous year, or
  3. Have participated in at least 3 MSSA events where such player shall have won a Regional Championship in such period/genre, or have finished in the top 20% or top three places, whichever is greater, at any official Provincial Championships for such period/genre, or have finished in the top 20% or top three places, whichever is greater, at the SA School National Championships for such period/genre, and be fully-paid-up members of an affiliated Member, and be ranked in the top ten of the Ladder for such period/genre.

Thus, in order to afford every player every opportunity to qualify for MSSA's National Team Trials, there are still the following events in which athletes can qualify for such events:

Aidan Smale earns a scholarship for esports - University of Rio Grande.

Aidan Smale will be heading off to the USA to continue his studies at the University of Rio Grande in Ohio for the Fall 2021 Semester (August). He will be going over to represent the university at CSGO, and, coming from King Edward VII School (KES) his academics are a number one priority with his gaming.

While a Registered Player for the Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club, Aidan earned Gauteng Provincial
Colours and South African National Colours for the StarCraft II esports title from Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA).

BRUSA helped Aidan from day one, but it was his tenacity and pure drive that really got him such a good scholarship. BRUSA is particularly proud of Aidan and cannot wait to help him along this awesome career path.

This is what Aidan had to say about everything. “It has always been a dream of mine to study in the USA and I have also always been into competitive gaming. I hope that this can open doors for other South African esports players that would like to pursue their education as well as a career in competitive esports".

Aidan continued by saying, "There are many Universities that offer many different titles. I have chosen to play CSGO at the University of Rio Grande as a scholarship athlete. This opportunity would not have been possible without the help of BRUSA Sports, and so I would like to give many thanks to Michael and his team at BRUSA Sports for all the help and advice through this process".

Kyle Vorster earns SA National Primary School Colours for Esports.

Kyle Vorster (Monument Primary School) is the current SA Champion for the Primary School section for the HearthStone esports title.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is of the firm opinion that, in order for esports to take its rightful place among the other established sports, the code of esports must be promoted at all school levels.

It is with this in mind that MSSA holds championships for Primary School learners in those game titles which are age appropriate.

The titles that  are played at school level are:

Kyle Vorster (Monument Primary School) has participated in official school events since 2019, and in order to maintain his standard and position of pre-eminence in the game is a member f the prestigious ZAG Academy.

Thus it has come with no surprise that Kyle Vorster won the primary school section for the HearthStone esports title in MSSA's 2021 SA National Online Schools Championships which was held on 26 June 2021.

Having won all his games in his section, Kyle has thus earned himself SA National Primary School Colours for esports.
