MSSA selects its Team Manager for SAREC

 

Terry Allwright (Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club) has been selected to manage Team Esports South Africa at GEF's SAREC 2022

Terry Allwright (Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club) has been selected to manage Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) esports team that will participate in the Southern Africa Region Esports Championships 2022 (SAREC 2022) which shall be held in Lilongwe, Malawi on December 3rd and 4th , 2022.

SAREC 2022 is a joint project of the GEF's Africa Esports Development Federation (AEDF) and the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 and it will be a demonstration showpiece alongside the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games.

Terry's duties not only include managing the team at such SAREC but will also involve representing South Africa's interests in the various meetings that shall be held at such SAREC.

There is no doubt that Terry is more than qualified for the role. Having been an active athlete for over 10 years, a previous SA National Champion, MSSA Board member since 2018, and a practicing attorney, Terry has all the necessary skills to do South Africa proud on the administrative level and ensure that Team Esports South Africa, which will play in eFootball and Street Fighter V, will achieve their best results and bring honour to South Africa.

Aidan Smale earns a scholarship for esports - University of Rio Grande.


Aidan Smale will be heading off to the USA to continue his studies at the University of Rio Grande in Ohio for the Fall 2021 Semester (August). He will be going over to represent the university at CSGO, and, coming from King Edward VII School (KES) his academics are a number one priority with his gaming.

While a Registered Player for the Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club, Aidan earned Gauteng Provincial
Colours and South African National Colours for the StarCraft II esports title from Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA).

BRUSA helped Aidan from day one, but it was his tenacity and pure drive that really got him such a good scholarship. BRUSA is particularly proud of Aidan and cannot wait to help him along this awesome career path.

This is what Aidan had to say about everything. “It has always been a dream of mine to study in the USA and I have also always been into competitive gaming. I hope that this can open doors for other South African esports players that would like to pursue their education as well as a career in competitive esports".

Aidan continued by saying, "There are many Universities that offer many different titles. I have chosen to play CSGO at the University of Rio Grande as a scholarship athlete. This opportunity would not have been possible without the help of BRUSA Sports, and so I would like to give many thanks to Michael and his team at BRUSA Sports for all the help and advice through this process".

29th OLD EDWARDIAN SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS - 13 &14 March 2021

 

Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club dominates wargames events in South Africa.
The 29th OLD EDWARDIAN SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS shall be held at the Old Edwardian Society, 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton, Johannesburg, on 13 &14 March 2021.

The championship is renown for having many of South Africa's top players play in such championships as a warm up to Mind Sports South Africa's Provincial Championships. Past participation in this event is a veritable 'who's who' in South African gaming. No less than eight world champions have used the Old Edwardian Summer Championships in which to hone their skills.

Since the Old Edwardian Summer Championships does not count for MSSA's official rankings, the players who participate in the board gaming, esports and wargames events, are able to dabble with new tactics, and ready themselves for the new season.

The championships shall start on both days at 9H00. The figure-games shall be played on both days.

This is an open championship and open to all whether affiliated to Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) or not.

Resumption of hostilities.

 

Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club (OEMSC) opened its doors again on 4 October 2020.

Most of the club's faithful turned up to do battle, and soon miniature armies were taking to the field in the fascinating game of tabletop wargames..

The long break had allowed some members to rejuvenate their armies, and all had the opportunity to revisit the rules.

Thus the club saw even a better standard of play.

The most exciting game played was between Palmyran and Late Imperial Roman armies. The final result came down to a nail-biting last round in which victory was snatched away by the Palmyrans as they denied allowing the legionaries to make contact with the Palmyran inferior bowmen.

Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club meets every Sunday from 14H00 to 18H00 at  the Old Edwardian Society, 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton.

How clubs offer to host official mind sports events.

On 1 August 2020 Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) invited all members to suggest which events they want to see retained in the article "Getting ready for 2021".

Of course a number of member clubs have submitted their views, all of which are being collated and will be discussed by MSSA's Management Committee and the Board Gaming, Card Gaming, Esports and Wargames Boards of Control.

However, it is important to know how MSSA decides where each championship is held.

Regional Championships:

Regional Championships may be hosted by any member club. Even a club based in a different region may host a Regional Championship in an entirely different region should MSSA's Management Committee approve. Such was the case when the Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club hosted the eThekwini Regional Championship at the Durban Gaming Expo in July 2018.

Provincial Championships:

Provincial Championships rotate among the member clubs within any such province. Thus only clubs within KwaZulu Natal may host the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Championships. Through actively pursuing this policy, provincial championships are held in various venues which allow clubs to grow their support base and obtain media coverage. 

All online events are directly hosted by MSSA itself.

National Championships:

National Championships rotate among all interested member clubs based within South Africa.

As such the prestigious SA National Championships may be held in any city in South Africa. While some gamers may consider such to be inconvenient, it must be remembered that hosting the SA National Championships or the SA Schools' National Championships gives a huge boost to the host club. Such boost to the host club may be felt for many years afterwards in terms of increased membership, participation and media coverage.

However, to host any Regional, Provincial, and/or National Championship, the applicant member club must submit its application to host to the General Secretary by 1 November 2020.

Again Bishop's College takes the honours.

Bishop's DotA 1st team at MSSA's SA School National Championships where they earned their SA School Colours.
Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has just released the latest ladder results for the DotA 2 esports title.In September 2018, the Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club (OEMSC) - Mind Sports South Africa's oldest member club - snatched the lead from Sinister5.
However, Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club's (OEMSC) stay in pole position was short lived.

Bishops College challenged the Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club, the younger, and more energetic, Bishops DotA 2 team consists of Matthew von Bulow, Tristan Smith, Alaric McGregor, Karl stapelberg and Calum Fraser.

Bishop's DotA 1st team has shown commitment, dedication, and a much improved skill in 2018 as borne out by the school team's performance during the Online Provincial School Championships (where they obtained 1st place), and the SA School National Championships (where the team again toook 1st place). It should be noted that MSSA started its School Championships in 1996.

The Ladder works on a system of challenges.

Clubs may challenge any club on the ladder. Any club so challenged has 5 days within which to respond and play the match. Such rule allows the ladder to retain its dynamic nature and stops the challenged club from delaying unnecessarily.

However, any team challenged during any official MSSA event while both teams are participating in such event, and are paired by the umpire to play against each other, must play such challenge. This means that any or all games in a MSSA Regional, Provincial, and/or National Championship may count as ladder games.
