Procedure to be followed by private clubs affiliating for the 2021 season.

 

Just some of the private clubs affiliated to Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA).

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is the national federation for Board games, Card games, Esports, and Wargames.

MSSA promotes all  the different disciplines equally, although each affiliated club may pick-and-choose which discipline it wishes to promote in its club. Some clubs will promote the whole gambit, while others will concentrate on only one discipline, and/or even just concentrate on one specific title.

The choice is ultimately up to the member club.

The various mind sports offer unique opportunities to many South Africans. Many Souuth Africans have been able to earn Regional, Provincial, and National Colours which have allowed them to earn bursaries and obtain first-class educations.

MSSA has sent teams with full Protea Colours to international events since 1991 for wargames, 1996 for Morabaraba, 1997 for Checkers, and 2005 for Esports. 

All selected have found being part of the national team to be an education in itself.. 

All clubs must be legal bodies, as well as being non-profit organizations. Thus each club needs to have a founding document. Associations may use the draft constitution provided below.

It is the club that is the member of MSSA, while the players are affiliated to the club.

Any applicant needs to be aware of the following:

1. MSSA’s Constitution, 
2. MSSA’s General Regulations, 
3. Proforma Constitution - this is a draft constitution that is used by many clubs affiliated to MSSA, 
4. An Application for Affiliation form,
5. Registration Forms for all players – including the administrators and any/all coaches,
6. The fee note form – please note that the fees for private clubs are R108.00 affiliation fee and R115.00 per player per annum, 
7. The Letter of Undertaking, and
8. A brochure about MSSA. 

In order to affiliate, the completed Application for affiliation Form must be submitted to the MSSA.

Once the Board has approved a club’s affiliation, the club then needs to complete the Google Registration Page allocated to the club for the players and make payment.

All club members may participate in all events for which it qualifies. Such events include meetings, championships, courses, and so forth. 

Advantages of having a MSSA affiliated club: 

There are many advantages of having a MSSA affiliated club, such as:

1. Being part of a community where your club has a real say in how things are done
2. Being able to apply for National Lottery Funding – MSSA member clubs can apply for up to R800,000.00 in funding
3. Being able to get assistance from your local government
4. Experience increased media exposure of your events and your gamers
5. Become part of the international community through the MSSA Registered players are able to become internationally recognised umpires, etc.
6. Enable your gamers to take part in MSSA events, which may qualify them for Regional, Provincial, and National colours, overseas trips, and even sports bursaries at university.

MSSA’s Constitution   

The Constitution forms the foundation of the MSSA. It guarantees members rights and governs the way that the MSSA operates. It can only be amended by a two-thirds majority at a Council Meeting. Please remember that Associations only have two (2) votes each, whereas member clubs have a representational vote, being: normal clubs: one vote per every five registered players, and school clubs: one vote per every ten registered players.

MSSA’s General Regulations   

The General Regulations comprises of decisions made by both Council and Executive Committee Meetings. The General Regulations deals with how sub-committees operate as well as to how teams are selected and development funding is distributed. Please refer to Schedule 10.12 in regard to the rights of clubs in hosting events.

MSSA’s Discipline Specific Regulations   

The Discipline Specific Regulations deal with rules concerning the different disciplines. The Disciplines that the MSSA caters for are; Board Gaming, Card gaming, Esports, and Figure Gaming.

Application for Affiliation form   

When a club applies for membership, the applicant club must complete such form and return the same to the MSSA.

Fee note for 2021 

The fee note details the Affiliation Fees and Registration fees that are payable.

Player Registration Form   

The Player Registration Form needs to be completed by every player that is a member of a club and intends to participate in MSSA affairs.

MSSA’s Letter of Undertaking   

The Letter of Undertaking is for all registered players who sit on any MSSA committee.

OLD EDWARDIAN MIND SPORTS CLUB NAMES ITS COMMITTEE FOR 2020

Colin Webster, three times world wargames champion, is chairperson of the Old edwardian Mind Sports Club.

The Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club (OEMSC) was founded in 1982. Originally known as the Johannesburg Wargames Club the club moved to the Old Edwardian Society in 1989. As such OEMSC is the oldest member club in Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) and is probably the oldest club in the world that caters for board games, esports, and wargames.

The club has produced a number of Protea team members as well as having produced four world champions.

Thus a club steeped in history and excellence remains at the cutting edge of development of esports in South Africa - and the world!

At OEMSC's recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), the following were elected into office to steer the club forward:

The committee can boast of having over 82 years of experience between the four committee members. The experience is tempered with knowledge at all levels from grass-roots through to international.

27th OLD EDWARDIAN SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 27th OLD EDWARDIAN SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS shall be held at the Old Edwardian Society, 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton, Johannesburg, on 2 & 3 February 2019.

The championship is renown for having many of South Africa's top players play in such championships as a warm up to Mind Sports South Africa's Provincial Championships. Past participation in this event is a veritable 'who's who' in South African gaming. No less than eight world champions have used the Old Edwardian Summer Championships in which to hone their skills.

Since the Old Edwardian Summer Championships does not count for MSSA's official rankings, the players who participate in the board gaming, esports and wargames events, are able to dabble with new tactics, and ready themselves for the new season.

The championships shall start on both days at 9H00. The figure-games shall be played on both days.

This is an open championship and open to all.

Terence Allwright crowned champion.

Terence Allwright  - 2018 Old Edwardian Champion.

The 26th OLD EDWARDIAN SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS was held at the Old Edwardian Society, 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton, Johannesburg, on 3 & 4 February 2018.

The championship is renown for having many of South Africa's top players play in such championships as a warm up to the Gauteng and North West Championships. Past participation in this event is a veritable 'who's who' in South African gaming. No less that eight world champions have used the Old Edwardian Summer Championships in the past to hone their skills.

Only in the final game on Sunday afternoon was Terence sorely tested  as his army stood on a 'knife's-edge' in which victory did not seem to be so clear.

Nevertheless, with great finesse, Terence dispatched his opponent to take the victory.
Thus it was at such championships that Terence Allwright emerged as the victor in the wargames division. Having won every game that he played, there is no doubt that Terence is the undisputed champion and is a force with which to be reckoned.

At Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club's 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 28 January 2018, the usual order of business was dealt with as required by the club's constitution.

The Chairperson's report was approved, the Annual Financial Statements (AFS) were duly questioned, and approved, and then it got down to the serious business of elections.

The leadership of a club can make or break a club. If the leadership is apathetic, the club will follow suit, and it will only be a matter of time before the club disintegrates.

Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club (OEMSC) is confident that it has elected the 'right sort' into the main leadership role for the club. Terry (as Terence is often referred), first joined the club in 1991 and upon returning to South Africa, rejoined the club in order to participate in wargames.

Terence too serves on MSSA's Management Board as the Figure Gaming Representative - a position to which he was elected in December 2017 at MSSA's AGM.

There is no doubt that under Terence Allwright Old Edwardian Mind Sports Club will grow and prosper.

Free coaching

Ancients being played at MSSA's SA National Championships.

For many years it has been recognised that the Old Edwardian Wargames Club is one of the top wargames clubs in South Africa.

The Old Edwardian Wargames Club has long been renown for producing more players that have earned a place in the Protea Team than any club in South Africa. In total Old Eds has produced 23 Protea Team members and has created 5 world champions.

It is also known that a club game at the Old Edwardian Wargames Club is often a game that is harder and of a higher standard than what players will experience at most provincial championships.

To play at the Old Edwardian Wargames Club is thus not for the faint-hearted. The standard of play experienced by gamers at the club is thus what makes truly great gamers. The skill and camaraderie creates great players and solid friendships.

The club too gives free coaching to all members on a weekly basis at normal club days.

The club meets every Sunday (except Easter, Christmas and days on which there are Provincial or National Championships) from 14H00 to 18H00.

However, as a special, to get people ready for MSSA's championships, as well as for the 25th Old Edwardian Wargames Summer Championships, the Old Edwardian Wargames Club is offering free coaching to scholars every weekend. The coaching shall be done in the Blue Room at the Old Edwardian Society - 11 Ninth Avenue, Lower Houghton in Johannesburg.

The coaching shall be done for the Ancients wargames period.

MSSA's umpiring course - 20 January 2017.

One of the most important aspects of a well run championship is the consistency and standard of umpiring.

Umpiring affects every aspect of a championship, and since Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is highly cognisant of such, MSSA shall be holding a number of umpires' courses during 2018.

Such umpiring courses around the country shall ensure that umpires are certified and are fully aware of their duties and responsibilities.

The first such course shall be done as follows:

The cost will include morning and afternoon tea, and lunch.

The course shall include:

* Ethics
* Background to MSSA's systems
* Roles of the different umpires
* Entry
* Basic rules to the games
* Pairings
* Data capturing of results
* How results are further used

At the end, a test will be given, and those that pass will be accredited as umpires.

Any Registered Player who is 18 or older may register for such course through their member club.

South Africa takes on Namibia in an exciting online international test match in the esports title of FIFA '17 on Saturday, 29 July 2017 at 14HOO.

So far South Africa has an unbeaten record against Namibia. However Namibia, over the years, has been at pains to improve their standard in order to successfully challenge South Africa.

Nevertheless, MSSA (South Africa's official national federation for esports) is confident that South Africa's system of Regional, Provincial, and National Championships has put its players in good stead to fend off  any such challenge.

Thus MSSA has chosen its team to officially represent South Africa, being:

• Khahliso Malape (Fakkel School), and 
• Gordon McCormack (JCS Academy). 

Both players reside in Sasolburg in the Free State.

Khaliso Malape has already racked up a number of sterling achievements having won the 2016 SA National Championships, and tied for first place with Gordon McCormack at the 2017 Free State Championships.

Namibia has selected their two top players (Patrick Matjila, and John Walenga) who will  no doubt represent Namibia with as much pride as what Khahliso Malape and Gordon McCormack will do for South Africa.

Old Edwardian Society is to host online test match between South Africa and Namibia.

The National Colours Boards in the main entrance showing the names of all members who had earned Springbok and/or Protea Colours.

South Africa (as  represented by MSSA) shall be playing an online test match against Namibia (NeSA) in FIFA '17 on aturday,  29 July 2017 at 12:00 WAT / 13:00 SAST.

The test match forms part  of a greater vision held to further develop  esports throughout all of Africa.

By establishing non-profit national federations throughout Africa, CAeS and its member federations are paving the way for esports to eventually be accepted into the All African Games.

Thus, MSSA's oldest member club - the Old Edwardian Wargames Club - which was founded in 1982 has  taken it upon its shoulders to host the online test match.

The South African  National Team shall play from the  King's Tavern, a venue that houses a great deal of the Society's sporting memorabilia.

The match shall be filmed and shown on MSSA's channel on TULUNTULU.

25th Old Edwardian Wargames Championships

Colin Webster - five time winner of the Old Edwardian Summer Wargames Championships.

On 4 & 5 February 20!7, the Old Edwardian Wargames Club held its annual wargames championships.

Such championship is open to any player whether they are a member of MSSA or not, and many believe that the championships marks the beginning of South africa's season.

The championship differs considerably from MSSA's championships as players have to select armies that are 600AP (600 Army Points) in strength as opposed to the usual 400AP.

However, the additional 200AP are not immediately used in battle, such extra 200AP are kept in reserve to replace losses.

Yes, losses are carried forward.

Thus armies, if misused, may dwindle in size to almost nothing for the final game.The championship too forces players to re-evaluate the different troops that they use, and, as a result after such championships, many of the players who participated emerge for the year's gruelling round of championships with leaner, and very much meaner, troop combinations.

The championship affords the top competitors the opportunity to experiment more than in any other competition.

Thus the championship is always well subscribed and hard-fought.
