Results: 2022 Online Western Cape Championships

Jonathan Brown (Team Playbell) who represented South Africa in Eilat in 2021, totally dominated Tekken 7 at the Online Western Cape Championships.

The online provincial championship system ensures that its esports athletes are not compromised in terms of being able to qualify for provincial colours and for possible inclusion in South Africa's National Protea Team to attend International Esports Federation's 14th World Esports Championships in November in Bali later this year.

Esports athletes were thus able to play in the comfort and safety of their own homes and are still capable of competing on provincial, and even, a national levels.

Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) 2022 Western Cape Online Provincial Championships proved to be a popular event with players participating from four (4) provinces. MSSA's Western Cape Online Provincial Championships allowed athletes to play around with perfecting new tactics and strategies leading up to the 2022 team selection.

Athletes are reminded that by finishing in the top 3, or top twenty percent - whichever is greater, at MSSA's Western Cape Online Provincial Championships, such athletes qualify to participate in the annual National Team trials which are used to select the national squad and for the Protea Team.

While the 'Old Guard' such as Jonathan Brown, Kyle Voster, Aidan Voster, and Theunis van der Merwe dominated their respective esports titles, it was refreshing and exciting to see newcomers, in the form of CAST_E-Sports Team 1, laying all to waste in the Call of Duty Mobile (CODM) title.

As seen in the past, so much is dependent on having strong administrators to ensure the success of both clubs and athletes. In the case of Call of Duty Mobile, it is Crystal Hewitt who is the rock upon which the success of both club and athlete is built.

Nineteen (19) athletes were awarded provincial colours for the 2022 gaming year.

SA's Tekken 7 player bows out at IESF's 13th World Championships.

South Africa's Jonathan "CactuarKiDD" Brown at IESF's 13th World Championships in Eilat, Israel.

Mind Sports South Africa's player, Jonathan "CactuarKiDD" Brown, fought long and hard at IESF's 13th World Championships in Eilat, Israel.

The group in which South Africa's Jonathan "CactuarKiDD" Brown was randomly placed was a veritable group of death which also comprised of a player from each of Georgia, Phillipines, Namibia, and Israel.

Although Jonathan gave it his all, and with unwavering sportsmanship, Jonathan was unable to advance out of the group stage.

Jonathan has already stated to MSSA that he has learned much on the international stage, and will fight to keep his place in the Protea Team so that he can attend IESF's 14th World Championships and better his result.

Ms. Amanda Pakade, MSSA President, stated, on seeing the results, "I am happy with Jonathan's positive outlook and look forward to seeing him further improve".

National Team Managers make the difference.

Johan van Breda (ZAG Academt) is in his 5th year as National Team Manager.

Ever since 2009 when IESF first held its World Championships for esports, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has participated in such event.

Johan van Breda (ZAG Academy) made his first appearance as National Team Manager for Esports in 2017.

The position is vital to the success of a team. A bad manager can destroy the chances of the team, as the manager is there to relieve the stress from the team of all issues other than playing and playing well.

Ever since 2017, Johan has performed well as National Team Manager, according to Ms. Amanda Pakade (MSSA President) who also claims that Johan has assisted the team, each and every year, in reaching its full potential.

Thus with Johan van Breda accompanying Jonathan "CactuarKiDD" Brown on his exciting venture to IESF's 13thy World Championships in Eilat, Israel, all of MSSA has high hopes indeed.
