Results of MSSA's 16th Free State Provincial Championships.

Mind Sports South Africa's 16th Free State Provincial Championships held at Fakkel School of Skills went off without a hitch.

The doors opend, pairings were done and the various periods (games) were played.

The only concern expressed by MSSA is that some member clubs still seem to have a problem with entering their players on time, and some seem to have a problem adhering to the age restrictions of certain esports titles.

While late arrivals may be helped, if there is space available, age restrictions are non-negotiable. However, it should be noted that late entries can, and do, slow down the starting time of a championship due to the fact that the pairings have to be redone. Late entries are thus allowed at the discretion of the umpire.

Age restrictions are set by the Films and Publications Board, and a letter of consent is not good enough to allow an under-aged athlete to participate. Age restrictions are, therefore, final, and no discussion is entertained on such.

Nevertheless, MSSA's 16th Free State Provincial Championships was a huge success and saw no less than 11 member clubs from 2 provinces (representing 5 regions) battle it out for the silverware.

Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) 16th FREE STATE Championships is one of the most popular championships on the calendar. With Sasolburg's close proximity to Johannesburg and Pretoria, teams from Gauteng often travel to the Free State Championships to play for honours. The Free State Championship also proves to be a popular event for teams from North West which gives the championship the feel of a national championship.

Many of South Africa's top players who have represented South African Protea teams in international competition have taken advantage of the early championships in order to qualify for selection so that in the later championships the Registered Players can hone their skills to even higher levels. The general consensus is that in order for a Registered Player to do well in international competition, such player should play at least 30 games in provincial or national championships within a season.

MSSA is proud of its reputation of promoting youth in its national teams, and as a result, most of MSSA's teams that have represented South Africa have had a component of players that were learners who were still in High School.

Thus it should be noted that such Free State Championships not only counts towards players earning Provincial Colours, but also counts towards MSSA's selection process.

All gamers are reminded that MSSA's Free State Championships are an open championship. In other words any registered player, who is currently a registered learner, is entitled to enter the championship – no matter where they live.

In terms of the amendments enacted at MSSA's Annual General Meeting, any player that is ranked in the top ten positions on the ladder, automatically qualify for National Team Selection. It is therefore vital for any player wishing to be considered for national team selection to actively participate in the Ladder.

The Ladder works on a system of challenges throughout the year in order to give clubs the opportunity to improve their teams/players' playing skills outside of the normal MSSA championships. The Ladder allows teams/players' to experiment with new tactics, combinations, etc.

Registered Players, through the Member Club to which they are affiliated, may challenge any Register Player on the ladder. Any Registered Player so challenged has 5 days within which to respond and play the match. Such rule allows the ladder to retain its dynamic nature and stops the challenged Registered Player from delaying unnecessarily.

However, any Registered Player challenged during any official MSSA event while both such Registered Players are participating in such event, and are paired by the umpire to play against each other, must play such challenge. This means that any or all games in a MSSA Regional, Provincial, and/or National Championship may count as ladder games.
