Sportsmanship Award - Northern Cape Online Esports Provincial Championships

Irene Banda, of Sunnyridge Primary School in Germiston, is one of the up-and coming stars in South African esports.

A sportsmanship award serves as a testament to the values of fairness, respect, and integrity in sports. It acknowledges athletes who exemplify these qualities and contributes to fostering a positive sporting environment conducive to character development, teamwork, and enjoyment for all involved.

At every event MSSA selects the person who most embodies the concept of sportsmanship. At the end of the year, the Sportsperson of the Year is selected from those who have been selected at official MSSA events.

The
Northern Cape Online Esports Provincial Championships held on 24 January 2026 was the first championship held in 2026 to deliver a winner of a Sportsmanship Award and a candidate for the end of year Sportsmanship of the Year Award.

Irene Banda only started competing on a provincial and national championship level in 2025 where Irene won the 2025 Provincial School Online Championship for all provinces, and the 2025 South African National Championships to earn Gauteng Primary School Colours, South African Senior National Colours and South African Primary School National Colours.

In the Northern Cape Online Esports Provincial Championships held on 24 January 2026 Irene convincingly won the female section for the Clash Royale esports title to win both Senior and Primary School Gauteng Provincial Colours. • Enhanced Enjoyment of the Game: Good sportsmanship enhances the overall enjoyment of sports for participants, spectators, and officials alike. When athletes compete with respect and integrity, it creates a more pleasant and fulfilling experience for everyone involved.
  • Recognition of Effort Beyond Performance: While winning and performance are important aspects of sports, sportsmanship awards recognize athletes for qualities beyond their athletic abilities. This acknowledgment can motivate athletes to prioritize sportsmanship alongside their pursuit of excellence in performance.
  • Building a Positive Reputation: Athletes who consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship build a positive reputation for themselves, their teams, and their organizations. This reputation can open doors to opportunities such as scholarships, sponsorships, and leadership roles within the sports community.
  • Contribution to a Positive Sporting Culture: Recognizing sportsmanship through awards contributes to cultivating a positive sporting culture that values respect, fairness, and ethical conduct. This culture not only benefits individual athletes but also strengthens the integrity and reputation of sports as a whole.

In conclusion, a sportsmanship award serves as a testament to the values of fairness, respect, and integrity in sports. It acknowledges athletes who exemplify these qualities and contributes to fostering a positive sporting environment conducive to character development, teamwork, and enjoyment for all involved.

The importance of completing a championships.

Being a member of the Protea Esports Team requires the highest levels of sportsmanship.

While umpiring at Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) 4th Gauteng Online Championships I had the  misfortune to see five players withdraw from the championships after taking a loss. It should be noted that MSSA does not look kindly on such poor behaviour and such action counts against the player during any and all team selection.

While in any competition, winning is always the ultimate goal. However, it is important to remember that losing is also a part of the game. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we may find ourselves falling behind or facing tough opponents that seem unbeatable. In such situations, it can be tempting to give up and abandon the competition altogether. However, finishing a competition, even when you are losing, is crucial for several reasons.

Firstly, finishing a competition shows resilience and perseverance. It demonstrates that you are not someone who gives up easily and that you are willing to see things through to the end. This is an important quality to have not just in sports, but also in life. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but it is our ability to overcome them that sets us apart.

Secondly, finishing a competition allows you to learn from your mistakes. Losing is an opportunity to evaluate your performance, identify areas for improvement, and come up with a plan to do better next time. If you walk away from a competition without finishing it, you miss out on this opportunity to learn and grow.

Thirdly, finishing a competition sets a good example for others. Whether it is your teammates, children, or even strangers watching from the sidelines, seeing you continue to play and give it your best effort, even when things are not going well, can be inspiring. It shows them that it is possible to face adversity with dignity and grace.

Lastly, finishing a competition is a sign of respect for your opponents, organisers, and sponsors. By staying in the game until the end, you are acknowledging that your opponents are worthy adversaries and that you respect their skills and abilities. It is important to remember that winning is not the only measure of success. Playing with sportsmanship and respect for others is equally important.

While winning is always the desired outcome, losing is also a part of any competition. When faced with the prospect of losing, it is important to remember the benefits of finishing the competition. Not only does it show resilience and perseverance, but it also allows for learning and growth, sets a good example for others, and demonstrates respect for opponents. So, the next time you find yourself falling behind, stay in the game and give it your best effort until the very end.

2021 Sportsmanship awards to date

Liam Moodley (Northcliff High School) has already earned the Sportsmanship Award in three of MSSA's 2021 championships.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) takes sportsmanship very seriously.

Most reasonable athletes and parents would agree that sportsmanship is an important aspect of any sport. It is no less true for board games, esports, and wargames.

Although sportsmanship comes in many forms, everyone can give a few examples of what sportsmanship looks like and what it takes to be viewed as a “good sport”: However all the examples just scratch the surface of displaying good sportsmanship.

Sportsmanship is an understanding of and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity, and general goodwill toward an opponent.

Sportsmanship is athe affirmation that an athlete is disciplined enough to have perspective, maintain poise and do what is best for his or her teammates and fellow competitors.

Being able to make appropriate behavioral choices at the “moment of truth” and in a pressure situation will often reveal a player’s character and his or her ability to be a good sport. Simply put, sportsmanship is a choice.

While it is all so very easy to get caught up in a game and become too focused on winning, there is so much to be gained and learned from an athletic experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Good sportsmanship is one of those life lessons that should be intentionally learned, taught, practiced and reinforced.

It is on such basis that MSSA makes the Sportsmanship Award after each and every championship that it runs.

The winners are then, at the end of the year, are all in line to win the prestigious Dorian Love Trophy for the athlete that most epitomizes such qualities.

MSSA is proud of each athlete to whom the sportsmanship award has been made, and each athlete has a very dear position in the heart of MSSA.
