University of Pretoria is the top university in terms of producing Protea Team members. |
However, Protea Colours should not be seen as an end result in themselves, but rather as the entry ticket to the wonderful world of international competition. Thus, national colours should never be pursued as a 'bucket list' item that people rush to do before graduating from school, but should instead be pursued as a long-term objective. For many, the realization of earning Protea Colours is the end result of countless hours, and many years of work.
University of Pretoria (TUKS) heads the list of University clubs with nine players who have been awarded, and re-awarded, eleven times. University of Johannesburg (UJ) is in second place with 6 athletes who have been awarded twelve times.
The biggest surprise is that the oldest university mind sports club in the country affiliated to Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), University of Witwatersrand (WITS), only finished in fourth place. This is due to many of Wits students and alumni having played for other private clubs. Had such players played for Wits, the figures would be very different with Wits then having a commanding lead.
There is no doubt that the universities are an important element in the growth of esports as a sport.
