Colin Webster re-elected as President of Mind Sports South Africa.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) was founded in 1985, and one of the persons instrumental in the founding of MSSA was Colin Webster.

Colin Webster served as President of MSSA from its founding through to 2013 when Simphiwe Maphumulo was elected in as MSSA President.

From 2013 until 2022, Colin Webster served as MSSA's General Secretary where he was able to give the duly elected Presidents at such time, Simphiwe Maphumulo, Morizane Boyes, and Amanda Pakade much needed support.

However, Colin's commitment to Mind Sports was not restricted only to South Africa. Colin also served on International Esports Federation (IESF) as a Board Member (2013 - 2018) and as President of IESF (2018 - 2020), on International Wargames Federation as President, and served on Confederation of African Esports (CAES) from (2008 - 2013) and then as General Secretary of CAES from 2014 until the present.

Colin Webster always keen to volunteer, too served on South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Commission's (SASCOC) Dispute and Arbitration Commission for a number of years.

Not satisfied with participating on the Board, Colin has also immersed himself in almost every aspect of MSSA's operations. Thus in 1998, Colin was seen umpiring in South Africa's first official esports Championships - the Gauteng Provincial Championships held at Old Edwardian Society.

Colin is thus well known as a driving force in esports, and although has been involved in esports administration is known for  his ability to promote youth and females in all structures. Being open to new ideas and change, Colin has encouraged MSSA to readily adapt to the changing conditions and circumstances. 

With Colin re-elected as MSSA's President, MSSA is bound to move forward as never before.

Further enforcing good governance.

 

Past president Simphiwe Maphumulo (2010 - 2013) holds a position of Hon. Vice-President.

It is a long established principle that all sports federations should have individuals on their management structures who are not directly beholden to any member.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is aware of the need, and in 2018 altered its Connstitution to bring one such person/s onto the Management Board.

At MSSA's Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 1 December 2018, it was unanimously agreed by all those eligible to vote to allow all past Presidents, who have completed all their terms and who currently do not hold an elected position shall be awarded the position of Hon. Vice-President.

Such Hon. Vice-President shall be entitled to attend meetings of the Council, and shall have power to vote at Executive and Management Board Meetings.

By bringing on past presidents who do not hold any other postions within MSSA, MSSA is able to draw on the vast knowledge base of such individuals, as well as have an individual on board who is more objective and detached.

International Esports Federation's Boards from 2013 laid solid foundations upon which the IESF could grow and prosper. Over the years, especially while South African, Colin Webster, was president, special attention was applied to good governance, gender equity and increasing IESF's visibility on a global scale.

It was from 2013 that IESF ensured that it had created the correct policies and  procedures to enter, and be accepted into, the world of international sport.

With the position of IESF's presidency now being open, two formidable candidates are vying for the top spot.

Both candidates currently serve on IESF's Board and have both made invaluable contributions to IESF. The candidates are none other than Vlad Marinescu (USA) and His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahayan (UAE). Vlad Marinescu made his debut into IESF in 2019 when he was co-opted onto the Board. The Board recognizing his abilities, voted him into the vacant position of Vice-President. Vlad's enthusiasm is infectious and through his efforts, great efforts have been made to increase IESF's membership. His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahayan's dedication and commitment to esports has been truly spectacular. Being a driving force in the UAE, as well as a past president of AESF, and as a Board member of IESF, His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahayan has always been the voice of reason. The elections will take place on 21 December 2020 and, there is no doubt, that whomever is elected, IESF, and the entire esports community,i stands to be a winner. Also read:

Colin Webster Elected as New President of IESF

The 2018 International Esports Federation's General Meeting (GM) took place on November 10th at the ‘TESL Arena’ in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei, during IESF's 10th Esports World Championship (WC).

Colin Webster, former IESF Board Member and General Secretary of Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), was elected as the new President of IESF to serve the role for the remaining term of presidency, which is until 2019 GM. Mr. Colin Webster has been with the IESF Board since 2013, and has been actively involved in promoting esports as a fully accredited sport, conducting dialogues with various traditional sports stakeholders.

In fact, Mind Sports South Africa was the first national federation to be accepted as a member of a National Olympic Committee, and MSSA was able to award Protea Colurs to its teams as far back as 2005.

Although every club may nominate Registered Players for positions on the Management Board, the Selection Committee, and for Provincial and Regional Directors, only one position is ‘ring-fenced’. Such position is that for the position of MSSA president.

Nevertheless, even though the position of MSSA president is ‘ring-fenced’, every member club may still nominate eligible candidates for such position, and may still vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the valid nominations.

Only Registered Players who have already fully served all their full terms for which they were elected to the Management Board may then stand for the position of MSSA president.

Even individuals who are no longer registered, but who meet the criteria and register before the 1 November 2018 deadline are able to stand for the position. In total there are 26 individuals who fall into this category.

Time to get your nominations in - deadline 1 November 2018

All member clubs in good-standing may attend and vote at MSSA's Annual General Meeting.

Any full-paid-up Registered Player is able to stand for any position as long as a member club nominates such player, and another member club seconds such nomination.

There is no doubt that the 2018 MSSA Annual General Meeting to be held on 1 December 2018 will be an exciting affair.

Not only will there be some important proposed changes to the Constitution, but a number of the positions on the Management Board are also up for grabs.

Management Board positions up for election are (3 year terms):

1. President
2. Three out of the five Vice-President positions
3. Esports Representative
4. National Schools Director

Provincial Director positions up for election are (2 year terms):

1. Eastern Cape
2. Gauteng
3. KwaZulu Natal
4. Mpumulanga
5. Northern Cape
6. North West
7. Western Cape

Regional Director positions up for election are (1 year term):

1. All

Thus the 2018 elections will be more than interesting.

It should be noted that no person may be elected into more than one position.

The Management Board has worked well over the past number of years, and it will indeed be interesting to again see democracy at work.

As it can be  seen from the above, MSSA does not hold truck with 'succession plans', but instead trusts entirely on its membership applying its mind and electing the right people to further promote all the disciplines under is jurisdition.

IESF to elect a new president.

International Esports Federation (IESF) shall be electing a new President at its Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) to be held on 9 November 2018 in Koahsuing City, Chinese Taipei.

IESF's Ordinary General Meeting coincides with its 10th World Championships and will no doubt be attended by the Presidents of all its member National Federations.

There are only three individuals that currently qualify for election. The three are Silviu Stroei (Romania), Constantine Surkot (Russia), and Colin Webster (South Africa).

All three individuals have had an immeasurable impact on esports in their own nations as well as within IESF, and it will indeed be interesting to see who the membership chooses to chair the organisation that is leading esports forward as a fully accredited sport.

The missive sent out by IESF, reads as follows:

"Referring with the upcoming Ordinary General Meeting to be held on November 9^th, Kaohsiung

Members are reminded that at such Ordinary General Meeting, IESF shall elect a new President to serve out the remaining term.

 Members are Notified of Article 31 of International Esports Federation's Statutes, which provides that:

•  Any nomination of a candidate for election as President of International Esports Federation shall be nominated by the Full Member to which he/she is affiliated and in good-standing, and 
• has already completed a full term of office in IESF for which they were elected, and 
• has been recommended by at least one-third of Members, and/or 
• ecommended by a majority of the Board members, and 
• shall be delivered to the Secretary General (chung@ie-sf.org ) not later than 5 October 2018."

Not a single member on Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) voted against the co-option of Amanda Pakade to the newly vacant position of MSSA President. The reasons for such support can be clearly seen in the calibre of the the person so co-opted as President for the period running up to MSSA's AGM in December 2018.

While at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), where Amanda studied sport management, Amanda became an excellent competitor. and besides having won a string of provincial and national awards, won silver in Morabaraba at the 2007 World Championships.
While at University, Amanda too became involved in the administration of MSSA and served as the Players' Representative from 2006 through to 2008. Amanda too earned a ranking as both a provincial and national umpire.
Amanda has too served MSSA as being a member of the current Selection Committee. Of course, being co-opted as President, Amanda now has to resign as a member of the Selection Committee as MSSA does not allow anyone to hold more than one position.
Today Amanda is a mother of two children, Inam and Hlumi, and is a network marketing Pro for Longrich health, wealth and beauty products as well as teaching group exercise classes at Virgin Active.

By being co-opted as President, Amanda is determined to make a difference in the competitor's lives - just as she does in the lives of all with whom she comes into contact. Amanda's personal hashtag is: #l was born to make an impact. Already, Amanda has identified four areas in which she intends to effect major changes before 1 December 2018. The four areas are:

• To ensure greater efficacy in regards to national team selection,
• To improve the inclusivity of MSSA championships,
• Oversee the award of all colours awarded, and
• Encourage greater gender equity and representivity.

There is no doubt that Amanda is indeed a valuable asset to MSSA, and that MSSA under Amanda's guiding hand will continue to grow and prosper.

Following the news that Morizane Boyes has resigned as president of Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), there seems to be a little confusion in some quarters about what happens next.

Because MSSA is an association with carefully drafted rules and regulations, MSSA continues to operate as normal with the Management Board still in a position to deliver all of its objectives.

That is why MSSA is not a hierarchy, but is instead an association run by committee.

However, what will happen next, is that MSSA's Management Board shall co-opt a person to act as President until the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on 1 December 2018 at Fakkel School, 20 Jan Smuts Ave., Sasolburg.

At MSSA's 35th AGM, to be held on 1 December 2018, elections shall be held for a new president. Such president's term shall be from December 2018 to December 2021. It should be noted however, that only people who have already completed their terms of office on the Management Board may be elected into the position of president.

"She who is Powerful"

Morizane Boyes - President of MSSA.

Morizane Boyes first entered competitive gaming in 2013, and since then has not only been competitive, but has excelled in everything that she has done.

In 2013, Morizane earned her Mpumulanga Provincial Colours, and at the S A National Championships too earned herself National Federation Colours. That not being enough, at MSSA’s Annual General Meeting in December 2013, Morizane was elected in for the role of Womens’ Desk. Morizane immediately made her task to introduce more females to gaming.

Such were her efforts that Morizane won the Volunteer of the Year at SPAR's GSport Awards.

In the next year (2014), Morizane earned a re-award of her Provincial Colours at the Gauteng Provincial Championships, and qualified for National Team trials for both StarCraft II and Tekken Tag Tournament being the only female in the history of MSSA to qualify for two different titles.

But StarCraft II and Tekken are not the only games played by Morizane. As Morizane says, “When I’m not “adulting” I am an avid gamer, I play almost everything”. This is indeed true, and apart from games like StarCraft II and Tekken, Morizane too plays CounterStrike and Rust.

Morizane was thus selected to represent South Africa as a member of the Protea eSports Team for IeSF’s 6thWorld Championships – Baku where Morizane represented the country above and beyond the call of duty.

Morizane too became the first female in the world to referee an international test match, and in 2015 refereed test matches in which South Africa played against Austria, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Tunisia.

With the birth of her son in 2016, Morizane stepped back from active competitive gaming, but still, through Sekhmetic strength, carried on with her duties.

In 2016, Morizane refereed the test match between South Africa and Ghana as well as organised the Mpumulanga Schools Championships, the Mpumulanga Championships, and the 30th S A National Championships. Even if Morizane was not directly involved in organising an event, Morizane was seen to be involved ‘backstage’.

Even while Morizane was competing herself, Morizane never shirked on her Management Board duties. During her period of office,female participation at MSSA events increased by a stunning 663%.

On the results shown under her tenure, Morizane was heard to remark, “I really am excited to see a larger group of girls joining the gaming scene. I believe that there is still a long way to go and I have some amazing women on the MSSA board who are going to help me make a difference for our girl gamers. We are hoping that we will be able to show the country how many talented ladies we have out there. Unfortunately some girls do still see this as a male dominated sport and we are hoping to change that mind set by starting female only tournaments where these ladies can build the confidence and the skill level to be able to take our guys.

Thus at MSSA’s 2016 Annual General Meeting, the Council Meeting with one voice elected Morizane as President as every member believes that Morizane is able to construct a sustainable gaming community.

Thus, even though MSSA is governed by committee, Morizane has firm and positive visions for gaming in South Africa.

Even though MSSA is tied in to its relationships with the International Wargames Federation, International e-Sports federation, and World draughts Federation, Morizanes vision for the MSSA is to have South African gaming to get stronger and move to larger stages all over the world!

Morizane stated, “I honestly believe we have the potential to place our stamp in larger tournaments and be taken seriously. I want to see bigger teams getting involved and I believe that it’s something we can achieve. I want to see e-Sports grow positively and I’m willing to work with the gaming community to achieve that”.

MSSA has always chosen the best possible Registered Players to represent South Africa, and many will remember the top South Africans like Robert Botha, Nathan Anderson, Anthony Hodgson, and Mohamed Wasim Lorgat (to name but a few)who have represented South Africa as members of the Protea Team. However, there are some clubs that are still not affiliated, and it is Morizane’s desire to see all organised clubs to be members of MSSA.

As Morizane stated on this issue, “As long as I’ve been a part of the MSSA, MSSA has never turned down any club that wanted to compete! I have heard from gamers in larger clubs that they fear that if they join the MSSA that they will not be able to take part in any other leagues. This is not the case we want gamers to improve their skills and playing as often as possible is the only way that can be achieved. I would love to be given the opportunity to converse with the gamers who have concerns, so that we can start creating a better gaming community”.

With a very energetic group of people who are on the MSSA Management Board, Morizane is looking forward to making all gaming bigger and better through creating a space where all gamers feel comfortable.

We all wish Morizane all the best with her three year term of office that runs until December 2019.

MSSA was founded in 1985 and since its inception has relied only upon volunteers to run the organisation.

Volunteers remain the back-bone of MSSA, and without the continued passion of such, MSSA would cease to be.

It is also most pleasing to see that the 2016 Annual general Meeting has delivered a committee in which 6 out of the 15 office-bearers are female.

With Morizane Boyes also holding the office of president, MSSA is confident that the needs and wants of Registered Players who are females will be addressed as never before.

It is sad that only MSSA has sent females to participate in every IeSF World Championships since 2012.

Members of MSSA's Management Board sat up to the wee hours of the mornin to check all the nominations that were submitted for the 2016 elections to be held at the Annual General Meeting on 4 December 2016.

Even though the 2016 elections have received a  record amount of  nominations for the Management Board, there are still four positions on such Board which are unopposed, being the position for the Card gaming representative, eSports Representative, General Secretary, and the Legal Advisor.

Obviously, everyone  is quite content with the performance of the incumbent officers.

The most encouraging aspect to the 2016 elections is that there are no fewer than seven women who are standing for positions.

The Management Board has 13 positions in total, so if all the women win their seats, MSSA could indeed have a different 'face', and would be the first mind sports body world-wide that would have true gender equity.

• A member club nominates the Registered Player on the prescribed form, and
• The Nomination Form has been submitted to MSSA on or before 1 November 2016, and
• The Registered Player is fully-paid-up for the 2015/2016 year as at the date of nomination, and
• The club nominating the Registered Player has paid its affiliation fees on or before 1 November 2016.

Democracy is a funny thing, you need to have the support of people to vote you in. Unlike people who claim to represent the community, MSSA demands that people  need to be elected.

Even though you may be the most qualified, the most honest, and dedicated, people may choose people who are less qualified, but more popular.

The trick is therefore to stand for a number of positions. By doing so the chances of being elected are increased.

However, does MSSA's Constitution allow such?

Indeed it does.

Thus a Registered Player may stand for the position of President, every position for Vice-President, General Secretary, and any other position for which the Registered Player qualifies.

However, as soon as the Registered Player is elected into a position, then all other nominations are vitiated as a Registered Player may only hold one position within MSSA.

Thus, should a member (for want of a better name) Jonathan Berg, stand for all the positions, as soon as he is elected  into the position of President, all other nominations are discharged and the General Meeting is unable to vote for such.

Of course, then all  the newly elected Registered Player has to do is the work associated with the office.

All MSSA Management Board positions are voluntary and for a three-year period.

Rumour has it that MSSA's President, Simphiwe Maphumulo, may not be standing for another term of office.

If that is the case, then who takes over?

Well, that will  be decided at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 4 December 2016.

The truth is that any fully-paid-up Registered Player may be nominated by a fully-paid-up member club.

Member clubs then use their votes to decide who is elected.

School clubs get one (1) vote for every ten members, and all other clubs get one (1) vote for every five members.

It would not be impossible to see Colin Webster again voted into the position. The clause inn the SASCOC MOI only prohibits (according to Tubby Reddy) a person from holding the position of President for more than ten consecutive years.

However, there may be better candidates in the wings.

Certainly Morizane Boyes is a good example of being  a good candidate.
Morizane joined the Management Board in 2013 as the person in charge of the Women's Desk.

While holding such position, Morizane  became accredited as MSSA's first female National umpire, and the world's first female international umpire.

Morizane has too put in countless hours promoting gaming among females,  and it is largely due to Morizane's efforts that MSSA's Protea Team for FIFA comprises a female gamer (Joline Bico).

However, MSSA will not know who all the 'runners and riders' are until 1 November 2016.

So, if you are looking at holding down SA's top job in gaming, talk to your club.
