Past sponsors.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) is deeply indebted to to its sponsors. In an age of continual rising costs none of MSSA's participation would be possible without the support provided by its valued sponsors of the national Protea Esports Team. The cost and effort of getting teams overseas is truly monumental, and the dedication shown by MSSA and its sponsors is truly admirable.

Since 2005, MSSA has sent esports teams out annually to represent South Africa in international competition.

The Protea colours issued are priceless, and offer the athletes unique opportunities that go far beyond just the game.

The sponsors themselves have all benefitted from the relationship. Association with the Protea brand is deeply rooted in the South African psyche.

White Rabbit Gaming affiliates to Mind Sports South Africa.

With the latest addition to Mind Sports South Africa, MSSA's membership now stands at 103 member clubs.

The majority of member clubs have memberships that would impress any sporting code and could consider themselves to be true 'multi gaming organisations' (MGO's).

Thus, the growth now extends into most of South Africa's provinces proving again that the MSSA has the largest 'footprint' in South Africa.

MSSA is now happy to see the return of an old member, White Rabbit Gaming, to make MSSA become even larger than what it was before.

White Rabbit Gaming is a club which is run by the same people who run the company of the same name. Both the club and the company values and missions are grounded in growing esports in South Africa as well as promoting players locally and internationally.

The brand was founded in 2010 by Alwyn “SwiTch” Venter who obtained his provincial colors in 2014. The club has a heart for the community and a vision of growing esports and it’s participants in South Africa with the aim of competing abroad with the world’s best players.

The brand currently has professional teams for CS:GO, Dota 2, Call of Duty, Overwatch and League of Legends with an entire community of over 300 casual gamers.

MSSA therefore welcome White Rabbit Gaming back into the fold, and trusts that the club will have a long and fruitful association with MSSA.

How does a school join up for MSSA's On-line Inter-School Provincial Championships?

Recently I wrote that MSSA's 8th Online Inter-School Provincial Championships is to be held on 10 February 2018.

There is no doubt that MSSA's Online Inter-School Championships is the fastest growing esports championship since it was started a mere six (8) years ago.

Who will ever forget the inaugural meeting where Dorian Love (Roedean), Pam Raper (Randburg High), Noelene du Toit (Northcliff High), and Shevon Ronne (St Peters) met with MSSA officials and the then sponsors (ASUS).

It was such meeting at which solid foundations were laid.

Over the years the rules have been tweaked to make MSSA's On-line Inter-School Provincial Championships more-and-more accessible.

The proof is in the pudding as the number of school clubs is growing almost at an exponential rate.

The schools that formed the foundation now find themselves under continual attack from new schools that assault them at every turn.

The new schools have no care of the 'Old Guard' and are adept at turning out new talent.

There probably isn't a championship anywhere in the world that is as competitive as MSSA's online inter-school championship.

Even though such championship requires a huge amount of work and dedication, it is easy-as-pie to join.

All a school needs to do is affiliate. To affiliate, the school club needs to have approval from the Principal as the club shall be playing under the school's colours which are the school's intellectual property.

The school club has to pay the annual affiliation fee of R100.00 as well as the annual registration fee of R6.00 per player per annum.

It is that easy and that cheap.

MSSA expects, based on previous year's figures, that there will be well over 80 schools participating in such championship in 2018.

2012 & 2013 eSports Board of Control Chairman

Mind Sports South Africa is without doubt the oldest member of the IeSF having been founded on 14 December 1985 as a non-profit Association.

As an Association, the MSSA is governed by a committee that is elected at its General Meetings. In order to create stability in the Association, elections for the posts on the Management Board are staggered so that the entire Management Board does not change at the same time which would result in a loss of knowledge and experience.

Obviously, the Chairman of the eSports Board of Control has become more and more important with the massive growth in eSports in South Africa. In the past the position of Chairman of the eSports Board of Control was often held by registered players who had a keen interest in eSports, but had not really participated themselves in competitive leagues.

2012 saw a new era being ushered in with David Webster being unanimously elected in to the position of Chairman of the eSports Board of Control.

David had received Protea Colours from Mind Sports South Africa (1997 to 2001) as well as from Shooting South Africa for the game of Paintball (2010 and 2011). However, it is his work in eSports that is relevant to his credentials. David Webster - known as bvd_russian - was one of the founding members (along with Garth Jones and Kevin Murphy) of the second oldest CounterStrike clans that we have in South Africa – Bravado Gaming (Bvd Gaming).

Bravado Gaming has done much to improve the standard of competitive gaming in South Africa, and is the only South African team to have played against the Swedish team SK Gaming in CounterStrike 1.6 when MSSA brought out SK Gaming out to South Africa for the 2008 ACER African Continental Championships.

In taking up his position on the eSports Board of Control, David brought with him years of experience of competitive play as well as a youthful enthusiasm that generated confidence and participation.

David was a true asset to MSSA and to all gaming in South Africa.

Korea is victorious at IeSF’s 2016 e-Sports World Championship - Jakarta

IeSF’s8th World Championship 2016 - Jakarta, officially ended on the 9^th of October 2016.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals were held on the previous day, being the 8^th of October, with the finals being played on the 9^th of October 2016 where all the title winners for three different game titles were decided.

The overall winner was Korea, which, remarkably, witnessed its League of Legends team finish the tournament without a single loss.Korea’s League of Legends team won the title by winning all the sets of games in the final, while its Counter Strike: Global Offensive team finished the tournament in 3^rd place overall. Korea’s HearthStone team, while only finishing in 4^th place, earned sufficient points to push the Korean national team into first place overall.

The total points earned by Korea was 152 to once again regain the top rank.

The overall runner-up was Finland, whose Counter Strike: Global Offensive team won the the CounterStrike: GO title, with 111 total points.

Austria, which only participated in HearthStone, came on the 3^rd place by earning 100 points for winning such title.

Team China, stayed on the 4^th place with total points of 98.

The opening of the 8^th IeSF World Championship 2016 Jakarta, saw a bevy of who's who at the opening, such as, IeSF Board Members, IeSF President Mr. Byung Hun Jun, IeSF Vice-President Mr Silviu Storie, officials from the Indonesian e-Sports Association, as well as personnel from The Association For International Sports for All.

During the 4 days of the tournament, many top-class games occurred which drove the crowds wild while a various events hosted by KEK TV, RAZER, ASUS, allowed visitors to experience a wider range of entertainment.

Thanks to the cooperation with TAFISA, there was a great deal of interest from the media which benefited the sponsors.

Colin Webster, Board Member of IeSF, gave the closing speech. The current status of e-sports becoming a global sport was emphasised, while at the same time asking the players to foster a sense of ethics to further develop e-sports.

Consequently, Korea’s winning back the 1^st place in the global ranking as well as the honour of the country in which e-sports is claimed to have started.

As for IeSF World Championship, as the sole e-sports competition based on nationality, the championship ended with great success once again.

Already everybody is looking forward to the 2017 competition.

South African participation in World Championships

South African gamers have been regular participants in international championships and have earned the respect of all of the other top players from around the world.

The MSSA has sent teams overseas overseas on a regular basis since 1991.

Such participation at international events has only been possible due to the tireless work of the many MSSA officials as well as the many sponsors who made this all happen. Putting SA on the eSports map

Without doubt no other organization in South Africa has done quite as much as Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) to put South Africa on the eSports gaming map.

"Really!", do I hear you exclaim?

Of course none would have been possible without the sponsors as indicated. However, where the MSSA is mentioned in the sponsors column, it should be noted that these events were entirely self-funded by the MSSA.

The cost and effort of getting teams overseas is truly monumental and the dedication shown by the MSSA is truly admirable.

It is no wonder that South Africa is now ranked 13th in the world.

Thus despite anybody else's protestations, the only body that has really tried to get South Africans into serious on-line competition is - the MSSA
