South Africa eclipsed by Algeria

Suhail Khan, MSSA DotA 2 Team Captain, inspired his team to give their all during the gruelling match against Algeria.

Mind Sports South Africa's Team Esports South Africa's victory over Namibia put South Africa through to the finals of  IESF's African Regional Championships held on 29 October 2022.

Team Esports South Africa faced off against Algeria in the final round to see which country would  win the spot for the DotA 2 esports title at IESF's 14th World Championships to be held in Bali.

Algeria proved to be a very differet team compared to Namibia, and the South African DotA 2 Team under the able leadership of  Suhail Khan gave it their all. Team Esports South africa played harder than they had ever played before and fought over every point with true spirit.

Nevertheless, the Algerian onslaught proved to be to strong, and Algeria eclipsed Team Esports South Africa to win 3 - 0.

While obviously disappointed, Team Captain, Suhail Khan stated, " the Algerian team is a remarkable team, their timing was perfect, and they proved to be the better team." Suhail went on to say, " Team Esports South Africa salutes Team Algeria and wishes them all the best for IESF's 14th World Championships to be held in Bali."

South Africa demolishes Namibia in DotA 2

MSSA's Team Esports South Africa for the DotA 2 title.

With IESF's African Regional Championships having been plagued with issues, the actual off-line event to have been held in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) from 28 to 30 October 2022 having to be cancelled, IESF has had to fall back to holding the event online.

This of course poses many problems due to the size of Africa, which is depicted incorrectly on all standard world maps, the poor infrastructure, the high latency, and the dearth of servers in South Africa.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) had initially entered its Counter-Strike: GO team and Tekken 7 player directly into International Esports Federation's 14th World Championships to be held in Bali later this year.

This means that the other teams entered by MSSA being, PUBGM, DotA 2, and Mobile Legends Bang Bang, had to qualify for Bali through IESF's online African Regional Championships.

The match between South Africa and Namibia saw South Africa take control of both games from the very beginning. At no stage did the Protea team let up and Namibia struggled to inflict any real damage on South Africa.

The South African victory against Namibia saw South Africa move through to the finals to battle against Algeria for a spot at IESF's 14th World Championships to be held in Bali.

Colin Webster, MSSA President, enthused about the team saying, "South africa's team under the expert leadership of Suhail Khan is arguably the best DotA 2 team ever fielded by South Africa in an IESF event."

Webster went on to say, "MSSA is very proud of its team, and wishes it all the very best against Algeria".

IESF 2022 World Esports Championships to Feature Record $500,000 Prize Pool

Busan, South Korea (23 February 2022) – International Esports Federation (IESF) has announced a total prize pool of $500,000 to be awarded at the upcoming 14th WE Championships Finals, taking place in Bali, Indonesia from 27 November to 9 December. The WE Championships prize pool has seen an unprecedented increase in just one year, from $55,000 in 2021 to $500,000 this year.

IESF President Vlad Marinescu said: “We are very excited for this momentous growth of the 2022 WE Championships Finals prize pool to $500,000, which is representative of the growing popularity and credibility of our flagship event. We are on track to hold the biggest and most inclusive WE Championships yet. We look forward to further increasing access to professional Esports opportunities and providing athletes with the ultimate environment to perform at their full potential.”   Mind Sports South Africa's (MSSA) President, Colin Webster (also Past President of IESF) stated, "This is a welcome development which is the fruit of many years of hard work by successive IESF Boards. The increase in prize money will further enable the growth of esports as a mainstream sport and is greatly welcomed by MSSA."

IESF recently announced the six game titles which will be featured at the competition. CS:GO, Dota 2, Tekken 7 and eFootball will return to this year’s WE Championships and mobile games PUBG mobile, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang will be featured for the first time. Registration for National Federations opened on 20 February and over 120 countries across six continents are expected to compete in the regional and national qualifiers.

The WE Championships remains the sole international Esports event where athletes compete by representing their countries. Bali was awarded hosting rights in September 2021 and was handed over the hosting duties during a special ceremony following the 2021 WE Championships Finals in Eilat, Israel, which united the World Esports Family for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six Game Titles for IESF's 2022 World Esports Championships

The six titles to be played at IESF's 2022 World Esports Championships being Counter-Strike: GO, DoTA 2, eFootballTM series, Mobile Legends, PUBG Mobile, and Tekken 7.

With International Esports Federation (IESF) having revealed the six game titles that will be featured in the 2022 World Esports Championships to be held in Bali from 27 November to 9 December 2022, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), the world's oldest national federation, has been spurred into action. MSSA shall enter a National Protea Team for each title into the African Continental event in the hope that all such teams qualify for the finals to be held in Bali. This means that the Management Board is hard at work to adjust the title line-up at all of MSSA's Provincial and national Championships. This does mean that some of the less popular game titles will be removed from the list of titles to be played in favour of those as hosted in IESF’s flagship event with Bali, Indonesia.

Member clubs are thus entreated to utilize all the different events under MSSA's control (Ladder, Derby, Regional, and National Championships) to get their teams to qualify for the National Team Trials to be held this year.
